On the 15th of this month, around the ninth hour of the daytime (approximately noon), a person appearing to be a student or young scholar came to the practice hall within the outer Sakurada residence of the Daizenno-daibu (Matsudaira Yoshinaga), and requested a meeting with a retainer by the name of Katsura Kogorō. As Kogorō happened to be away at the time, he was informed of this, but the visitor indicated he wished to wait and meet with him. Around the sixth-and-a-half hour of the evening (approximately 7 p.m.), Kogorō returned and the meeting took place. Since this was a person with whom Kogorō had had no prior acquaintance, he inquired as to the visitor's name and purpose. The visitor stated that he was one Uchida Man'nosuke, a rōnin from Mito, and that he was a member of the group that had carried out the violent attack within the castle enclosure (Edo Castle) that very day. He had, however, missed his opportunity to act and felt great regret. Since he found it distasteful to take his own life along the roadside, and as he had previously heard of Kogorō by name, he had come to request that Kogorō look after his affairs after death. Kogorō calmed him down and reported the matter to the appropriate authorities before returning; upon checking the scene, however, it was found that the man had left a single written document behind and had taken his own life. We hereby report this matter. Respectfully submitted.
