たゝ実用（じつよう）を学（まな）び。文章（もんく）などを巧（たくみ）に書の飾（かさり）はなき国（なら）
風（ふう）のよし。故に文字（もじ）の数（かず）も二十六字。数字（すうじ）九字。合て三十
五字にして。古今の書籍（かきもの）をよむに。師家（せんせい）を便（たよ）りり【語尾の重複ヵ】に
せずして。万（よろづ）の道をわきまふるに事たりぬるよし。唐土
の書籍は数万の文字（もじ）をもてすれば。我国の人はかならず

まゝおほし。唐土（もろこし）は聖賢（せいけん）の多く出給ふ国なるゆへ。
聖国（せいこく）と称し。又 文字（もんし）の国と美称（ひしやう）すれども文字辺（もんじへん）
に至りては。西洋（にしのくに）の諸国にをとりて迂遠（まはりとほし）といふべし。
唐土には項羽（こうう）の云。書￣ハ足￣ル＿三以￣テ記￣スルニ＿二名姓￣ヲ【一点脱】而（ノミ）已。剣￣ハ一人￣ノ敵￣ナリ
不＿レ足＿レ学￣ブニ。学￣バン＿二万人￣ノ敵￣ヲ＿一と。此 語意（ごゐ）西説（せいせつ）に略（ほゞ）似（に）たり。且（さて）西

ただ実用を学び、文章などを巧みに書く飾りはない国風がよい。故に文字の数も二十六字、数字九字、合わせて三十五字にして、古今の書籍を読むのに、先生を頼りにせずして、万の道を弁えるに事足りるという。中国の書籍は数万の文字を用いるので、我が国の人は必ず師匠について学ばなければ、全くその理義に通じない。故に年二、三十まで師に従い、字義の詮議のみに年月を費やし、一生の精力を文字の学に費やしてしまうことも

しばしば多い。中国は聖賢の多く出られる国なので、聖国と称し、また文字の国と美称するけれども、文字に関しては、西洋の諸国に劣って迂遠（回りくどい）というべきである。中国には項羽の言葉に「書は名姓を記すに足るのみ。剣は一人の敵なり、学ぶに足らず。学ばん、万人の敵を」とある。この語意は西洋の説にほぼ似ている。さて西洋の人は諸々の器財、或いは医術の器を製造する。その精巧さは日本・中国の及ばない物が多い。誠にその知恵は凡慮の外にあって、人の聞くところを驚かせる。

They simply study practical applications, and the national custom of not using ornate decorations in writing is good. Therefore, the number of letters is only twenty-six, with nine numerals, totaling thirty-five characters, and this is sufficient to read books from past and present, to discern myriad ways without relying on teachers. Chinese books use tens of thousands of characters, so people of our country must necessarily study under masters, or they cannot understand the principles and meanings at all. Therefore, they follow teachers until age twenty or thirty, spending years merely deliberating over the meanings of characters, and often spend their entire life's energy on the study of letters.

This happens quite frequently. China is a country from which many sages have emerged, so it is called a holy country and also praised as a country of letters, but regarding writing systems, it should be said to be inferior and circuitous compared to Western countries. In China, there are the words of Xiang Yu: "Writing is sufficient only to record names. The sword is an enemy of one person and not worth learning. I would learn to fight ten thousand enemies." The meaning of these words is roughly similar to Western theories. Now, Westerners manufacture various implements and medical instruments. Their precision often surpasses what Japan and China can achieve. Truly, their wisdom is beyond ordinary consideration and astonishes those who hear of it.
