家の帽子針には費長房も乗ることが困難であろう。その狂言というのは、姿は切幕の内にあって一声響く本舞台、「しばらく」がやまない成田屋の若旦那。侠客の胴中に篠塚の像を彫れば、頼み切った片腕の猪熊入道も引き立ての鯰坊主に等しく、鯉の滝登りは既に龍のごとく、吟ずる声色に聞く人は雲を起こし、うそぶける虎屋の蒸籠があれば風を生ずる。団扇絵、怪しの出格子へ呼び入れるあり。田舎同士の江戸見物はいずれも団十郎を先にして追い込みに見る。お家の芸の荒事には肝を弁当の焼き飯とともに潰し、案内者が三升自慢に鼻の高き一枚絵を求めて兄が守り袋に封じ、息災延命一生を健やかなお祓いと、相店に住めば都も田舎人も貴賤上下おしなべて感じない者こそなかった。しかるに去りし未の春、祖父の二十三回忌とて助六の初役を勤めたが、その鉢巻の色を知らず、祖父の面影を目の当たりに見るがごとく、再び開く花道の前渡り。
