His elegance was beyond compare, and everyone's "Chūshingura" performances continued to be great hits, but from the middle of summer in the Year of the Sheep, he unexpectedly fell ill with what seemed like a cold. The patrons of Edo - from princesses to flower-selling old women, people of all ranks and ages - made pilgrimages to various gods and buddhas, praying "Please grant him recovery." Their devotional hearts, like the "shō-shō" passages in the Tale of Genji, would not tire of making hundred-fold pilgrimages, steeling themselves with determination. Yet the protective talismans showed no benefit, and the pathos was like the three-masu (theater boxes) or the ephemeral bubbles floating on unfreezing water streams - easily vanishing, which is inevitable to mention. Despite all manner of prayers and incantations, and famous doctors exhausting their skills, even the medicinal herbs bestowed from heaven remained like those at the sal trees, and like the Yellow Emperor's ascension to heaven when the yellow dragon's nose hair fell out, a finite life in an infinite world cannot be bound even by Fudō's rope. The root of illness cannot be severed by the demon-subduing sharp sword, and no sign appeared of the precious medicine's efficacy - how pitiful this is. Taking the dawn of the twelfth (or thirteenth) day of the fifth month as the end of this life, the preciousness of life, the uncertain kyōgen of the floating world - having performed quick changes for merely twenty-two years, from the dharma hanamichi to the western dressing room, the stage props were withdrawn...
