手拭いを肩に掛けている者もあれば、腰に挟んでいる者もある。股引を履いている者もいれば、素足で裾を跳ね上げている者もある。もっとも普段は腰と足に半分ずつ、貝の口のように結ぶなど、それぞれの新しい型や新しい物で、おのおの美しさを競い合っている中でも、揃いの総模様は、みぞおちの辺りに比翼紋の大紋を染め出している。頭は「蓮がけ」、「ちょっきり本田」先をきらっとして左へ捻り、その他平撫で角銀杏など。粋も無粋も混ぜこぜにして、磨くのは額と日和下駄。草履の名にも冷や飯を言わせず、「ろうのすけかい」も煙管の雁首と言って首を憚るのもまたおかしくはないだろうか。往来する人を指して「合羽」「羽織」「後の傘」などと大声でいかにもとかくしく呼ばわって、睨みつけて通すのは往来を改めるためだろうか。いまだその子細は分からない。行き交う人々は数多いが、中でも他国の人と見れば、あの女人国の南風を慕うのと同じく、話に聞いた草履を直さないばかりで見物を固辞するけれども、さらに許さず
