一安政二乙卯年十月二日天気快晴和順なりし所夜の
亥刻過俄に地震す其強き事稀なる震ひなれども
其土地に強弱ありて横に震ふ所また竪に震ひ上る所有り
て人家を壓す所儘ありし時は大形四ッ前後なり眼たゝく
内の変動恐るへき事元来陰と陽との昇降時として一旦二
来るは震ふ事も大ひなりと諸書に見ゆ勿論震ひ動き
始は南北より来り東西より来る今度の地震は北より
来れる三田辺震ひ鎮りし頃はや北之方を見たるに
一面火光赤く発したたり色紅の如くなりしは千住辺

## 地震用心要草（地震に対する心得の覚書）
一、安政二年（1855年）乙卯の年、十月二日、天気は快晴で穏やかであったところ、夜の亥の刻（午後10時頃）を過ぎた頃、突然地震が起きた。その激しさはめったにない揺れであったが、土地によって強弱があり、横に揺れる場所もあれば、縦に揺れ上がる場所もあって、人家を押し潰したところも少なからずあった。その時刻はおおよそ四ツ（午後10時）前後であった。まばたきをする間もないほどの突然の変動は、恐るべきことである。そもそも陰と陽の昇降が、時として一度に二度来る場合は、揺れも大きいと各書物に記されている。もちろん揺れ動き始めは南北から来ることもあり、東西から来ることもある。今回の地震は北の方角から来たものであり、三田辺りで揺れが収まった頃、すぐに北の方を見ると、一面に火の光が赤く発して、色が紅のようであったのは千住辺りであった。

## Jishin Yōjin Kanamekusa (Essential Notes on Earthquake Preparedness)
One: On the second day of the tenth month of the second year of Ansei (1855), the year of Kinoto-U (乙卯), the weather was clear and calm, when past the Hour of the Boar (around 10 o'clock at night), an earthquake suddenly struck. The strength of it was an unusually powerful tremor, yet there were variations in intensity depending on the location — some places shook horizontally, while others were jolted vertically, and in quite a few places houses were crushed. At the time, it was around the Hour of the Boar (approximately 10 p.m.). The sudden upheaval, which struck in the blink of an eye, was truly terrifying. It is written in various texts that when the rise and fall of Yin and Yang occasionally arrive twice in succession, the trembling will be great. Naturally, the shaking may begin coming from the north-south direction or from the east-west direction. This particular earthquake came from the north; around the time the shaking subsided in the Mita area, upon looking immediately toward the north, the entire sky glowed red with firelight, like crimson — this was the Senju area.
