On the 24th day of the 3rd month of this year, from around the middle of the Hour of the Dog (approximately 9:00 p.m.) until the early Hour of the Boar (approximately 9:30 p.m.) on the following 25th day, an unprecedented great earthquake struck, and as recorded in this document, houses throughout the area were completely destroyed. In Murei-juku, fires broke out after the houses had collapsed, resulting in additional losses to burned structures. The number of people and horses and cattle killed instantly, as well as the injured, was enormous throughout the post towns. Furthermore, as the post towns reported that they were unable to provide the relay transport of people and horses beyond what was stipulated under the shōgun's vermilion-seal documents and official certificates, I immediately dispatched an inspector (tedai) to assess the situation. I will report the full details in due course, but for now I respectfully submit this preliminary notification. Respectfully submitted. 7th day of the 4th month [Kōka 4, 1847] --- **A report submitted regarding an inspection tour to Shiozaki Village along the Chikuma River in Shinano Province, undertaken for the purpose of national-service public works (kokueki fushin) assessment and arrangements, during which a great earthquake occurred — an overview of the inspection findings.** Takasaki Heihachi Nishimura Kakunai
