（前頁より続く）数え切れないほどの被害があったとのことです。如来堂にて籠っていた旅人は凡そ三十人余りで、これらの方々は無事に立ち去ることができましたが、衣類やその他の路銀（旅費）などはすべて焼失してしまったとのことです。遠国の者などは特に難渋している様子でございます。如来堂と山門だけが残り、その他は市中ともども一同焼失したと聞き及んでおります。死者の数については確認しがたいのですが、噂では善光寺町だけで即死者が二万人にも及ぶだろうとのことです。また、同所の住民のうち、二十五日の朝に残っていた者はわずか二、三百人に過ぎないとの噂でございます。もっとも、逃げ去った者もいるはずですので、概ねの人数も把握しがたいですが、いずれにせよ大変な惨事となっております。
一、塩崎村より西方の隣宿、上田領稲荷山宿も震潰した上、残らず焼失し、旅人その他の即死者が夥しいとのことでございますが、こちらも人数は不明で、噂では二、三千人とのことでございます。その他にも焼失した村や宿場では、当然ながら死者が多く出ている次第でございます。
一、信州犀川については、二十四日夜の大地震の時から流水が止まっております。二十六日の昼頃、私どもがその地を出発した時点においても水の流れはなく、また丹波島宿辺りから川上へ七、八里行った信濃路橋の辺りに刎橋（跳ね橋）がございましたが、前後から山崩れが起きて犀川を塞いでしまったとのことで、いつどこから出水するか予測しがたく、同所の川沿いはもちろん、低地の者たちも次々と逃げ去っております。これにより往還（街道）では上田・松代から役人が出張して、善光寺方面への往来を差し止めております。噂では、犀川の湛水により信州松本辺りは湖のようになり、桔梗ヶ原という所から水が押し開いて、そこから諏訪の湖水へ入り、天竜川へ流れ込むだろうなどと、様々な噂が飛び交っておりますが、おそらく山崩れの場所で十分に水が湛えられ（以下次頁へ続く）

There were approximately thirty or more travelers who had taken refuge in the Nyorai-dō (the hall enshrining the Amida Buddha), and while they were able to leave unharmed, their clothing and travel money were entirely lost to the fire. Those who had come from distant provinces were said to be in particularly dire straits. Only the Nyorai-dō and the Sanmon (the main gate) were left standing; everything else, including the entire town, was reported to have burned to the ground. The precise number of dead is difficult to ascertain, but rumors hold that the immediate death toll in Zenkoji-machi alone may have reached as many as 20,000 people. It is also rumored that by the morning of the 25th, only some two or three hundred of the town's residents remained. However, since many may have fled, an accurate count of the population is impossible to obtain. In any case, the disaster is of an extraordinary magnitude.
One item: The neighboring post town of Inariyama-juku, in Ueda domain, lying to the west of Shiozaki village, was also destroyed by the earthquake and subsequently burned to the ground without exception. The number of travelers and other immediate fatalities was said to be enormous; however, the exact number is likewise unknown, with rumors placing the toll at two or three thousand. In other villages and post towns that were destroyed by fire, it goes without saying that there were many casualties as well.
One item: Regarding the Sai River in Shinano Province, the flow of water stopped at the time of the great earthquake on the night of the 24th. When we departed the area around noon on the 26th, no water was flowing yet. Furthermore, it is reported that at the area of the Shinano-ji Bridge, located seven or eight ri (approx. 28–31 km) upstream from Tabashima-juku, there was a hane-bashi (a drawbridge or cantilever bridge), and landslides from both sides had blocked the Sai River. It is impossible to predict when or where the water might break through. Accordingly, not only the riverside residents but also those in low-lying areas are fleeing one after another. As a result, officials from Ueda and Matsushiro have been dispatched to the highway, and passage toward Zenkoji has been prohibited. Rumors are circulating to various effects — that the backed-up waters of the Sai River have turned the area around Matsumoto in Shinano into something resembling a lake, that the water will break through at a place called Kikyōgahara and flow into Lake Suwa, and then into the Tenryū River — but in all likelihood, the landslide is holding back a sufficient volume of water (continues on next page)...
