出る事あたわず陰 迫（せま）りて昇（のぼ）ることならず爰におゐて動き
震ふなり亦史記にも地震は陽伏して出す陰 迫（せま）りて
昇らず故に地を震ひ発すとあり是周の本記白陽甫の
本説なり今の陰陽家抔の説は何のそのか幾百に震動
あるなといへる是皆 迂怪（うくわい）の説にして取にたらず何ぞ地震
すること変とせんや抑大地は其中 渣滓（かす）こり集まりて形を
なす故気 旋転（せんてん）して其中に亙（わだかま）れり天は地の外を包み
地は其中間にありて水火の二気万物を発す水火は
一陰一陽なる故地は陰也故に小陽大陽にせばめられ
発する事得かたし地を激転（けぎてん）し震ひ出す烈敷（はげしき）は山を
崩し海を埋め人家を壓す震ふこと他所より繁く地を
持揚る如きなる又地平陸にして廣かりたる所程折々
地震す震ふも強きあり狭き所は山谷岩石（さんこくくわんせき）にさゝいられて
陽出ること緩やなり中華（もろこし）なとも闉広（みんこう）の地は常に動く
廣く平なる所を云 浙（せつ）より北は地震稀也山続き故なり
と云諺に云廉嶋の要石の事は兒女（じぢよ）の説にして取に
足らず大きなる鯰地の底にありて日本国中を戴す
るといふ尾鰭を動所地震すといふ廉嶋明神要石を
押給ふと云彼に本国中を戴たる鯰を圖したるを見るに
大いなる鯰の如きもの国々を戴たり是等は蜻蛉（とんぼう）の図を
現代語訳
（陽気が）出ることができず、陰気が迫って上昇することもできない。そこで（大地が）動き震えるのである。また『史記』にも、「地震は陽気が伏して出られず、陰気が迫って上昇できないために、大地を震わせ発動する」とある。これは周の本紀における白陽甫の本説である。現代の陰陽家などの説は、それほどのものでもなく、いくつもの震動があるなどと言っているが、これらはみな迂怪（的外れで奇怪）な説であって、取るに足りない。どうして地震を不思議なことと思う必要があろうか。そもそも大地はその内部に渣滓（かす・滓）が集まって形をなしているため、気が旋転してその内部にわだかまっている。天は地の外側を包み、地はその中間にあって、水と火の二気が万物を発生させる。水と火は一陰一陽であるから、大地は陰である。ゆえに小陽・大陽に挟まれて、（陽気が）発することが難しく、大地を激しく回転させて震わせ出す。激しい場合には山を
崩し、海を埋め、人家を押し潰す。他の場所よりも地震が頻繁に起こり、大地を持ち上げるかのような場所がある。また、地が平坦で広い場所ほど、時折地震が起こる。震え方も強いものがある。狭い場所は山谷や岩石に阻まれて、陽気が出ることが緩やかである。中国などでも闉広（広大な平地）の地は常に動く。広く平らな場所を指してのことである。浙（浙江）より北は地震が少ない、山続きであるためだ、と言われる。
俗説として言われる鹿島の要石のことは、子供じみた説であって取るに足りない。大きな鯰が地の底にいて日本国中を戴（背負って支えて）いるという話があり、その尾鰭を動かす際に地震が起こるという。鹿島明神が要石でそれを押さえていると言う。かの、日本国中を鯰が戴いているという図を見ると、大きな鯰のようなものが国々を背負っている。これらは蜻蛉（とんぼ）の図を

(The yang energy) cannot emerge, and the yin energy, being pressed, cannot ascend. It is for this reason that (the earth) moves and trembles. Furthermore, in the *Shiji* (Records of the Grand Historian), it is written: "Earthquakes occur because yang energy lies dormant and cannot emerge, while yin energy is pressed and cannot ascend, thereby causing the earth to tremble and erupt." This is the original theory of Bái Yángfǔ as found in the Basic Annals of the Zhou dynasty. The theories of contemporary yin-yang practitioners and the like are of little consequence, and their claims about there being numerous kinds of tremors are all fanciful and absurd theories unworthy of consideration. Why should one regard earthquakes as something extraordinary? To begin with, the earth takes its form because dregs and sediment have gathered within it, so vital energy (ki/qi) swirls and coils within its interior. Heaven envelops the exterior of the earth, and the earth exists between them; the two energies of water and fire give rise to all things. Since water and fire represent yin and yang respectively, the earth itself is yin. It is therefore compressed by minor yang and major yang, making it difficult for (yang energy) to be released, violently spinning and shaking the earth outward. In severe cases, this
causes mountains to collapse, seas to be filled, and human dwellings to be crushed. There are places where earthquakes are more frequent than elsewhere, as if the ground is being lifted up. Moreover, areas where the land is flat and expansive tend to experience earthquakes occasionally, and the tremors there can be quite strong. In narrower places, the yang energy emerges more slowly, being obstructed by mountain valleys and rocks. In China as well, the broad flat lands (*minguan*) are constantly in motion — this refers to wide and level areas. It is said that north of Zhe (Zhejiang), earthquakes are rare, due to the continuous mountain ranges.
As for the matter of the *Kanameishi* (keystone) at Kashima Shrine, which is spoken of in common lore, this is a childish theory unworthy of consideration. There is a tale that a giant catfish lies at the bottom of the earth, supporting all of Japan on its back, and that when it moves its tail fin, an earthquake occurs. It is also said that the deity of Kashima Shrine suppresses this catfish with the *Kanameishi*. Looking at illustrations depicting the catfish supporting all of Japan, one sees something resembling a great catfish carrying all the provinces on its back. These are like illustrations of dragonflies...
