苗代の準備や麦の収穫など重要な農繁期が次第に近づいているのに、地震の揺れは軽くなってきたものの、地鳴りは今もなお数十度にも及び、百姓たちは恐怖と悲嘆に沈んで途方に暮れ、ただ茫然としているばかりである。そのため役人を派遣して面倒を見させているものの、人々は落ち着いて生活することができずにいる。あの川中島の平地については、犀川の水がせき止められて流れがなくなり、用水が滞って干ばつにも及びそうな状況で、言葉に表せないほどの有様である。しかしながら、このまま放置することもできず、万一気持ちの乱れた者が現れることも、この時節のことゆえ懸念しないわけにはいかない。人心の安定のために、それぞれに対して繰り返し救済策を申し付けるつもりであるが、城の修復をはじめ、家中・城下町・領分全体にわたっての事であり、莫大な費用がかかることであって、とても行き届かない状況である。その上、犀川の地形の変化がどのようになるのかも心配で、当惑の極みに存じております。時節柄、恐れながら申し上げますが、どうしても自力では及びがたく、これにより格別の御憐憫をもって、金二万両を御下賜くださいますようお願い申し上げます。

As the crucial agricultural season for preparing seedling beds and harvesting wheat was approaching, although the tremors had become lighter, the ground rumblings continued dozens of times even now, and the farmers, sunk in fear and grief, had lost their way and remained in a daze. Officials were dispatched to attend to them, but the people could not settle down and live in peace. As for the flatlands of Kawanakajima, the damming of the Sai River had cut off the flow of water, causing disruption to the irrigation channels and threatening drought — a situation beyond words. Nevertheless, the situation could not be left unattended, and given the circumstances of the moment, it was impossible not to worry that some people might lose their composure and act against order. While we intend to repeatedly urge relief measures for each person in order to settle the people's hearts, the matter encompasses not only the repair of the castle but the entirety of the retainers, castle town, and the whole domain, requiring enormous sums — far beyond what can be adequately managed. Furthermore, the anxiety over what may become of the changed terrain of the Sai River causes us the utmost distress and bewilderment. Though we are deeply apprehensive given the times, as we are entirely unable to manage this through our own resources alone, we humbly request that, out of special compassion, we be granted a sum of twenty thousand ryō.

Regarding my domain of Matsushiro in Shinshū, I have been reporting the circumstances following the great earthquake on the night of the 24th of last month. Concerning the high mountains known as Ōba-yama and Mushikura-dake, which span the villages of Orifure, Umeki, Nenbutsuji, Kamikōyama, Jikyōgahara, Wasao, Tsubakimine, Hikage, and Kinasato — located in Mizuuchi-gun, approximately six to seven ri to the northwest (the direction of Dog and Boar, i.e., northwest) from the castle town — which collapsed during the earthquake on that same night: as roads have only recently become passable and an inspection was carried out, it was found that these nine villages suffered particularly severe damage. Furthermore, among them, the five villages of Orifure, Wasao, Umeki, Jikyōgahara, and Nenbutsuji were affected by the mountain [collapse]...
