(Continued from previous page) In the areas situated close to the mountain foothills — namely Heizawa-gumi within Nenbutsuji Village, Fujisawa-gumi and Yokomichi-gumi above Jikkyōgahara Village, Ōta-gumi within Iori Village, and Kuriki Village within Takafuku Village — totaling eleven sub-village units (kumi), approximately seventy households, 199 persons, and 30 horses were buried without a trace beneath the earth, rendering the greater part of these settlements utterly destroyed and abandoned. Furthermore, among the neighboring villages: in Kurosawa Village, of its 44 households and 235 residents, only 5 households survived, while the remaining 39 households with over 60 persons and 6 horses, as well as the entirety of Yamada-naka Village with 39 households and 42 persons, were likewise buried completely beneath the earth with no trace remaining, reducing them to abandoned ruins. It appears that the surrounding villages have also suffered extraordinary numbers of topographical changes, collapsed houses, and deaths, though investigations have not yet been fully completed. The aforementioned villages, unlike lowland villages, have their cultivated fields separated by mountain paths; situated at high elevations, they are disproportionately vast in area and difficult to access under ordinary circumstances. Moreover, even in normal times, the roads pass through terrain piled with enormous boulders, making them as treacherous as single-file paths.
Due to this great disaster, the original road surfaces have been entirely obliterated, meaning that detailed on-site inspections cannot be carried out for the time being. This situation is, no matter how one considers it, deeply lamentable and a source of great anguish. We have organized relief measures for the nearby villages that suffered comparatively less damage, assigning assistance to each accordingly. Although we have been submitting reports progressively, the destruction visited upon the villages at the foot of Mount Ōba and Mount Mushikura is of an unprecedented scale and particularly severe, and therefore we submit this further preliminary report.
Respectfully submitted.
