16th day of the 4th month Sanada Shinano no Kami
At my domain's seat of Matsushiro in Shinano Province, as previously reported, a great earthquake caused Iwakura Mountain within Yamahirabayashi Village in Sarashina District to collapse and become lodged in the Sai River, forming a dam. On the evening of the 13th, within approximately two hours, this natural dam broke through; the waters rushed out into the river channel, burst through and overflowed the embankments on both sides at the outlet toward the lowland settlements, and from there flooded the entirety of Nakajima island [the area between rivers]. From the area of Yokota Village in the same district, approximately one ri [~4 km] above the castle town, the floodwaters spread across the entire width of land extending down to the lower reaches of the Chikuma River. The force of the water was extremely powerful, and as floodwaters also accumulated progressively from the lower reaches, combined floodwaters overflowed and reversed course, pushing all the way up to the very edge of the castle, and water levels also rose on the landward side within the castle grounds. However, we managed to hold against this with the flood-control embankment constructed during the Bunsei era [1818–1830] with Your Lordship's approval. Although the embankment suffered major damage in various places, we ordered various emergency measures and worked urgently to hold it, and as the water receded during this effort, the castle interior narrowly avoided flooding. Nevertheless, a considerable amount of water had pushed up into the castle town below. As matters stood, floodwaters filled the riverside villages and spread all the way to the Tenryō [Shogunate-administered] territory around Nakano Village, appearing like a vast lake; however, as the waters gradually began to recede, immediately [the rest of the page continues]...
