(Continued from previous page) ...and took shelter in nearby fields, spending the night outdoors. Then, as a rumor spread that around 11 o'clock on the night of the 24th the principal image of Zenkoji Temple had flown away to Mount Asahi, both men went on the 26th to investigate. They made their way to a place called Kubodera, approximately eighteen or nineteen chō to the west of Zenkoji Temple. There, the villagers at the foot of the mountain were all together paying reverent worship. They reported that around 11 o'clock on the night of the 24th, torches had appeared on Mount Asahi, which they thought strange, and then torches appeared one after another on both left and right sides, and the principal image of Zenkoji Temple had made its sacred advent (raigō) accompanied by hollyhock banners. When they looked carefully to pay their respects, at approximately the eighth station up the mountain there was a large pine tree, and one of its branches was broken off; the diameter of the break appeared to be about five or six sun. Though it was difficult to discern clearly, a black form approximately seven or eight bu in size, resembling the principal image, could be seen. About two shaku below that, on another branch, a hollyhock banner was found hanging. However, as this was quite a tall mountain with a steep path, no one was able to climb up, and all could only worship from the foot of the mountain. Keizō departed the following day, the 27th, and returned to Edo on the first day of this month, reporting the foregoing events. Furthermore, Senjūrō, the manservant of Yasaburō, is said to have remained behind in that area. As this is a mysterious occurrence, I humbly report this matter. Respectfully submitted. 8th day of the 4th month Kobayashi Jinemon (seal), Chief Clerk under Takagi Seizaemon --- Prior Notice Regarding the Great Flood of the Chikuma River in Shinano Province Regarding the matter of which we submitted a report again this 4th month: due to the great earthquake on the night of the 24th day of the 3rd month of this year, in the territory of Sanada Shinano-no-Kami, the mountain called Kozōzan (字虚蔵山) within Hirabayashi Village, located upstream along the Saigawa River, collapsed and was pushed into the Saigawa River, filling the width of the river and blocking the flow of water. From that time until the 13th of this month — a period of twenty days — the villages upstream had been inundated with water. The area under the administration of Takagi Seizaemon, who had previously been instructed on emergency procedures, in Shinano Province, Taka[i]... (continues on next page)
