The Konoe messenger, Major Captain Takano, and the court liaison magistrates and others visited around the Sheep hour. All matters proceeded as in previous years, completed in about half an hour after the Monkey hour. This was most commendable. 20th day, Tsuchinotono-Ushi, clear with light rain: My father was on duty for the daytime watch service, and requested Deputy Tesei to serve as substitute. 21st day, Kanoe-Tora, clear: Had the residence cleaned. 22nd day, Kanotono-U: At exactly the Rabbit hour there was severe thunder and rain, which later cleared. 23rd day, Mizunoe-Tatsu, clear: I was on duty and my father provided the daytime substitute service for the night watch, requesting Deputy Tesei to serve as substitute. 27th day, Hinoe-Saru, cloudy: As the Aoi messengers Toshihira and Kiyoteru came to the capital, there was a gathering of old and young with formal announcements. As I was scheduled to appear, I attended. Fifth Month (large month) 1st day, Tsuchinoto-I, rain: The preliminary horse racing trials were held as usual. Superintendent Tsunetake served as supervisor, and I, Ikuaki (margin note: first time), and others had been requested in advance. After the third drumbeat and a short while later, I put on summer court dress and hemp formal wear and headed to the palace compound. Of course, Ikuaki accompanied me partway. However, the tatami arrangement in the palace compound differed from usual, so we called shrine servants from the sake hall to relay them properly. Soon Head Priest Lord Nobuhira arrived for duty, as did Superintendent Tsunetake, and all proceedings followed previous years' precedent. However, during the second race, there was an error in releasing the lead horse and chasing horse, so the superintendent ordered a restart. The chasing horse's chief priest Shigetaka broke away and stopped midway. The lead horse's assistant head priest Kiaaki did not release his grip. At this point, the supervisors at the exit could not bear it, and both horses could not be made to run, so they were withdrawn. The superintendent then ordered another restart, making it two restarts total. Also during the third race, the chasing horse's priest Kakioka Yoshikiyo dropped his court cap somewhere past the general stands, so the superintendent again ordered a restart. This was a rare occurrence. Furthermore, while Shizuori-shō's horse was ash-gray, the provisional inspector Taguchi's record listed it as deer-brown, so the superintendent inquired through the supervisor about this discrepancy. The reply was: "When I inquired with the horse officials, they said deer-brown, so I recorded it as such - what should be done?" After consultation, Superintendent Tsunetake spoke with the head priest, who immediately addressed Taguchi, concluding that this was entirely Taguchi's negligence. Later, at the superintendent's residence, Taguchi...
