賃（ちん）を若干滞（そこばくとゞこふ）らし。家明付（いえあけつく）れば台（だい）すへて。先（まつ）百日は大（だい）
丈夫（じやうぶ）と無家賃（むやちん）にして容易（たやす）く動（うご）かず。挙句（あげく）のはては
家附（いえづき）の。建具（たてぐ）をはづして逐電（ちくてん）し。番匠日庸（だいくひよう）の徒（ともがら）は夏（なつ）は昼（ひる）
寝（ね）に時（とき）を移（うつ）し。冬（ふゆ）は火（ひ）を焼長（たきなが）ばなし。其働（そのはたらき）を疎（をろそか？）にして
賃銭（ちんせん）の増（まし）を貪（むさぼ）り材木金具（さいもくかなぐ）の費（ついへ）をいとはず。また吝嗇（りんしよく）
なる家持（いえもち）は渡普請（わたしふしん）に棟梁（とうりやう）をいじめ。或（あるひ）は入札（いれふだ）の安値（やすね）に

現代語訳

欲深き人の心と降る雪は、積もるにつけて道を失う。

明らかな罪人はこれを討ち、
隠れ潜む悪鬼はこれを罰する。

何も言えず、涙ながらに受取証書を書いて済ませるが、心の中では済まないと思っている。

また、家主の方では、爪に火をともすような長屋を経営しながら、家の破損を修繕もせずに家賃を取ることばかり考えている。一方、借家人の欲四郎（欲深い借家人）は家賃をいくらか滞納し、家を明け渡す際には台を据えて（居座って）、「まず百日は大丈夫」と家賃を払わずに容易に立ち退こうとしない。挙句の果てには、家についている建具を外して逐電してしまう。

大工・日雇い職人の類は、夏は昼寝をして時を費やし、冬は火を焚きっぱなしにして、その仕事ぶりをおろそかにしながら賃金の増額ばかりを貪り、材木や金具の無駄遣いも厭わない。

また、ケチな家持ち（家主）は、請負普請において棟梁をいじめ、あるいは入札で安値を強いる。

The heart of a greedy person is like falling snow — the more it accumulates, the more one loses one's way.

Those whose crimes are manifest shall be struck down;
Evil spirits lurking in hiding shall be punished.

Unable to say anything, one writes out a receipt in tears and considers the matter settled — yet in one's heart, it is far from settled.

Furthermore, as for landlords who manage cramped tenement houses in a miserly fashion: they think only of collecting rent without repairing the damage to their properties. On the other hand, tenants of the greedy sort — call them "Yoku-shirō" (Mr. Greedyguts) — fall behind on their rent by some amount, and when it comes time to vacate, they dig in their heels, claiming that "at least a hundred days are safe," and do not easily move out while paying no rent. In the end, they remove the fitted fixtures and fittings belonging to the house and abscond.

The carpenters and day laborers of their ilk waste the summer hours napping at midday, and in winter leave fires burning endlessly unattended; they neglect their work while greedily seeking higher wages, and show no concern for the wasteful expenditure of timber and metal fittings.

Moreover, miserly property owners bully master carpenters in contract construction work, or force artificially low prices through bidding.
