(Continued from previous page) ...stirred his resolve, and together with his wife, he cultivated three thousand acts of virtue. As a result, his fate was transformed and he received happiness. He then cultivated a further three thousand acts and was blessed with a child; after cultivating ten thousand acts, he rose to high office and preserved his life to an age of seventy-some years. This matter is recorded in detail in the *Ledger of Self-Knowledge of Merits and Demerits* (*Kōka Jichiroku*).
The "Commentary on the Words" (*Wenyan*) in the *Book of Changes* (*Yi Jing*) states: "In a family that accumulates goodness, there will surely be an abundance of blessings; in a family that accumulates evil, there will surely be an abundance of calamities." The commentary explains: "When what is accumulated is good, blessings and joy extend to one's descendants; when what is accumulated is not good, disaster and misfortune flow down through later generations."
Furthermore, the *Mingxin Baojian* (*Mirror of the Enlightened Mind*) quotes the household precepts of Sima Wengong, saying: "Even if one accumulates gold and leaves it to one's descendants, the descendants will not necessarily be able to preserve it. Even if one accumulates books for the benefit of one's descendants, the descendants will not necessarily be able to read them. There is nothing better than accumulating hidden virtue in obscurity and making it one's plan for the long endurance of one's descendants."
Hidden virtue (*intoku*) refers to performing good deeds inwardly and without making them widely known. These concealed acts of virtue are invariably known to the Way of Heaven as "manifest recompense" (*yōhō*), and it is for this reason that Heaven bestows their reward.
This is the same as the divine words of Amaterasu Ōmikami: "Righteousness and honesty are not a matter of momentary favoritism," yet in the end, one comes to receive the compassion of the sun and moon. Therefore, uphold the Way with honesty and integrity, and practice hidden virtue... (Continued on next page)
