ほどこすにおいては。たとへ天命（てんめい）の因果（いんぐわ）ありとも
かならず改（あたら）まりて。災殃（わざわひ）を逃（のが）るべし。総（すべ）【惣】て我味（わがうま）きと
思（おも）ふものは他（ひと）にも味（うま）し。苦（にが）きものは上下（しやうか）ともに苦（にが）
し。楽（たの）しむことは上下（しやうか）ともたのしくかなしむことは

貴賎（きせん）ともにかわることなく。是（これ）人情（にんじやう）なり。しかるをこの

われのみ暑（あつ）くなく寒（さむ）くなく味（うま）き物（もの）を喰（くひ）さへす
ればよきと。おもひやりなき人は。家内一統（かないいつたう）他人（たにん）は原（もと）
より。帰伏（きふく）せざれば損失（そんしつ）多（おほ）く。此人（このひと）かならず天（てん）の罰（ばつ）
を蒙（かうふ）るべし。唯（たゞ）慈悲（じひ）の心（こゝろ）を第（だい）一とし。常（つね）に陰徳（いんとく）を施（ほどこ）
し。上（かみ）を敬（うやま）ひ下（しも）をあわれみ借（かり）たるは速（すみや）かに返（かへ）し。生（しやう）
あるものを殺（ころ）さず。牛馬（きうば）をむごく責（せめ）つかひ。罪（つみ）なきに
犬（いぬ）を打擲（うちたゝ）き。欲のなぐさみに鶏（とり）を蹴（け）あはせなど。か
ならずしもすべからず

現代語訳

（前頁より続く）陰徳を施すにおいては、たとえ天命による因果があったとしても、必ずそれが改まって、災いを逃れることができるであろう。

総じて、自分がおいしいと思うものは他人にもおいしいものであり、苦いものは身分の上下を問わず苦いものである。楽しいことは上下ともに楽しく、悲しいことは上下ともに悲しい。それゆえ「恕」という字は「心の如く」と書いて、思いやりという意味であり、「自分が嫌だと思うことは、人に施してはならない」という教えである。諺に言う、「我が身をつねって人の痛さを知れ」とはまさにそのことである。自分が好むものは他人も好むものであり、貴賎の別なく変わることはない。これが人情というものである。

しかるにこの人情を欠いて、他人が暑くとも寒くともかまわず、自分だけが暑くなく寒くなく、美味しいものを食べさえすればよいと、思いやりのない人は、家族一同はもとより他人からも従われることがなく、損失が多く、このような人は必ず天の罰を受けることになるであろう。

ただ慈悲の心を第一とし、常に陰徳を施し、上の者を敬い下の者をあわれみ、借りたものは速やかに返し、生きているものを殺さず、牛や馬をむごく酷使し、罪もないのに犬を打擲し、欲の慰みに鶏を蹴り合わせさせるなど、決してしてはならない。

(Continued from previous page) ...when one practices hidden virtue, even if there exists a karmic fate ordained by Heaven, it will surely be transformed, and one will be able to escape calamity.

In general, what one finds delicious, others find delicious as well; what is bitter is bitter for all, regardless of rank or station. What brings joy brings joy to all, high and low alike; what brings sorrow brings sorrow to all, high and low alike. Thus the character *jo* (恕, "empathy" or "benevolence") is written as "like the heart," conveying the meaning of consideration for others — the teaching that "what you yourself find disagreeable, do not inflict upon others." As the proverb says, "Pinch your own flesh and know another's pain." What one desires, others desire as well; this does not change regardless of whether one is high-born or low-born. This is what is meant by human feeling (*ninjō*).

Yet those who lack this human feeling — who care not whether others are hot or cold, and think only that it is enough for themselves alone to be comfortable and to eat good food — will find that neither their own household nor others will submit to them willingly. Such a person will suffer great losses, and will surely incur the punishment of Heaven.

Make compassion (*jihi*) your foremost priority; constantly practice hidden virtue; show reverence to those above you and show compassion to those below; repay what you have borrowed promptly; do not take the life of living creatures; do not drive oxen and horses cruelly; do not beat dogs that have committed no offense; and do not pit roosters against one another for the amusement of your desires. Such things must absolutely not be done.
