いましむる所（ところ）なるべし。去程（さるほど）にこの
災殃（わざはひ）を幸（さいわ）ひに。人気（にんき）こゝに改（あらた）まらば。偏（ひとへ）に
太平（たいへい）のもとひならんと。いさゝか其説（そのせつ）を
諭（さと）し。世直理草子（よなをりざうし）と題（だい）すること爾（しか）り

　　寅乃霜月中旬　　南坡山人謹誌

　咏地震巨濤（ぢしんつなみをえいず）
地震與（ぢしんと）＿二怒潮（つなみと）＿一。宝永以来荒（ほうえいこのかたのあれ）。
臨（けはしきに）＿レ険幸逃（のぞんでさいわいにけはしき）＿レ険（をのがる）。避（わざはひを）＿レ殃却遇（さけてかへつてわざわひ）＿レ殃（にあふ）。
家崩埋（いへくづれてちまたを）＿二道路（うづみ）＿一。橋落聳（はしをちてほばしら）＿二帆檣（そびゆ）＿一。
欲（このたびの）＿レ認（へんを）＿一【二の誤記ヵ】今般変（みとめんとほつせば）＿一。須（すべからく）＿レ求（このはんかう）＿二此板行（をもとむべし）＿一。

現代語訳

（これは天が）戒めるところであろう。そうであるから、この
災難を幸いとして、人心がここに改まるならば、ひとえに
太平の基となるであろうと、いささかその説を
諭し、『世直り草子』と題することはこのとおりである。

　　寅の霜月中旬　　南坡山人、謹んで誌す

　地震と津波を詠む
地震と怒潮（津波）とは、宝永以来の荒れようである。
険しき場に臨んで、幸いに険しき（危難）を逃れたかと思えば、
災いを避けたつもりが、かえって災いに遭う。
家は崩れて道路を埋め、橋は落ちて帆柱が（水面に）そびえる。
今般の変事を記録に留めようとするならば、
すべからくこの板行（出版物）を求めるべし。

英語訳

(This is what) Heaven admonishes us with. Therefore, if this
calamity should prove fortunate enough to bring about a renewal of the people's spirit,
it shall surely become the very foundation of lasting peace — with this thought in mind, I have set forth
this explanation and titled the work *Yonaori Zōshi* ("A Booklet on Setting the World Aright"), and so it is.

　A Poem on the Earthquake and Tsunami
The earthquake and the raging waves (tsunami) — such devastation has not been seen since the Hōei [disaster].
Standing on the brink of peril, one may luckily escape that very peril,
yet in fleeing calamity, one may turn and find oneself caught in calamity again.
Houses collapse and bury the roads; bridges fall and ships' masts tower above the waters.
If one wishes to understand and record the events of this recent disaster,
one must surely seek out this very publication.
