押（おさ）ゆるゆへに。四月の末（すへ）に至（いた）るまで。陽気（やうき）地中に

溜（たま）りかね。終（つい）に押（おさ）へし陰気を。突（つき）やぶりて発（はつ）する
なり此時土へこたへ。大地おびたゝしく震動（しんどう）す

堪（こら）へかねていかりを発するがごときものなり。扨（さて）又

その跡へ沈み入るのを順当とする。ところが、たとえば春には、陽気が先に抜け出て、陰気がその跡へおさまるべきところ、下るべき陰気が先に進んで地中へ臨むために、上るべき陽気がこれによって押さえられ、出ることができない。それゆえ、春が長く冷えたままで不正の邪気となれば、人をはじめ草木にも害をおよぼし、人は病気を発し、草木は傷み枯れることがある。そもそも陽気は五月の夏至までには浮かび上がり終わるものであるのに、この陰気が先に臨んで押さえるために、四月の末に至るまで陽気が地中にあって浮かび出ることができない。すると陽気が地中にたまりかね、ついに押さえていた陰気を突き破って発するのである。このとき大地に響き、大地はおびただしく震動する。たとえば人が常日頃から憤りを抱えながら辛抱していたが、堪えかねてついに怒りを発するようなものである。

さて、また秋には陰気が先に出て、その跡へ陽気がおさまり入るのが順当であるのに、下り沈む陽気が先に進んで地中に臨むために、上るべき陰気がこれによって押さえられ、浮かび出ることができない。秋が長くあたたかいままで邪気となる。これもまた人をはじめ草木に害をおよぼすものである。陰気は……（次頁へ続く）

It is the natural order for [the descending energy] to sink and enter into the space left behind. However, take spring as an example: Yang energy should emerge first, and Yin energy should settle into the space left in its wake — yet when the descending Yin energy advances ahead and presses down into the earth, the Yang energy that ought to rise is suppressed by it and cannot emerge. Thus, if spring remains cold for a prolonged period and becomes an irregular, baleful energy (jaki), it harms people as well as plants and trees — people fall ill, and plants and trees wither and die. In the ordinary course of things, Yang energy should have completely risen to the surface by the summer solstice in the fifth month; yet because this Yin energy has pressed forward and suppressed it, Yang energy remains trapped within the earth even through the end of the fourth month, unable to float upward. The Yang energy then accumulates to an unbearable degree within the earth and at last bursts through the Yin energy that has been suppressing it, erupting outward. At this moment it reverberates through the earth, causing the ground to tremble and shake tremendously. It is, so to speak, like a person who has long harbored a grievance and endured it patiently, but who at last, unable to bear it any longer, gives vent to their anger in an outburst.

Now, in autumn, it is the natural order for Yin energy to emerge first, with Yang energy settling into the space left behind — yet the descending Yang energy advances ahead and presses down into the earth, so that the Yin energy that ought to rise is suppressed by it and cannot float upward.
