**手形庖丁全図**
鯨が網にかかり、万銛で突き、剣で切って半死半生の時、羽指の者がこの庖丁を持って鯨に飛び乗る。背美は潮吹き穴より1尋ばかり上の方と1尋ばかり下の方との2か所ほどを縦様に、鞁の胴の形に切り穿つ。これを手形切と言う。座頭鯨も大きいものには潮吹き穴を切り、また手形をも切る。長須鯨は潮吹き穴だけを切る。右の通りに切ることができた上で、庖丁を頭の上に差し上げて合図すれば、羽指どもが障子釣という綱を持って飛び入り、右の穴に通してきて持双船に繋ぎ付けるのである。子鯨は潮吹きの障子も切らず、手形をも切らずして突き殺すのである。

When a whale is caught in the nets, struck with countless harpoons, and cut with swords until it is half-dead and half-alive, the harpooner takes this knife and leaps onto the whale. For the back fin whale, they cut vertically in the shape of a leather body piece at two locations: about one fathom above the blowhole and about one fathom below it. This is called "hand-hold cutting." For large right whales, they cut the blowhole and also make hand-holds. For fin whales, only the blowhole is cut. After successfully making these cuts as described, when the knife is raised above the head as a signal, the harpooners jump in with ropes called "partition hooks," thread them through the aforementioned holes, and tie them to the main paired boats. For whale calves, neither the blowhole partition nor hand-holds are cut—they are simply killed by stabbing.
