物を宣るは書より大なるはなし。形を存るは画より善
なるはなし。と宣哉古人の風姿。古物の雅品。今知るものは
画図の妙也。今や葛飾戴【載は誤記】斗先生。画に堪能にして其
名高く。其画を乞ふもの多く。都下の我これが為に賞し。
爾れば閣筆に遑なく。門人臨本に乏しきを患ふ。先生
これを憐みて。邂逅閑ある毎に。山水人物をはじめ。動物
器財に至るまで。随筆してこれを写。梓彫て以門人に授。初学

現代語訳
物事を表現するのに書物より優れたものはない。形を保存するのに絵画より良いものはない。このように古人の風格や古物の優雅な品格を述べたものである。今それを知る者は絵画の妙技によってである。今や葛飾北斎先生は、絵画に優れた才能を持ち、その名声は高い。その絵を求める者は多く、江戸の人々がこのために賞賛している。そうであれば筆を置く暇もなく、門人たちは手本となる作品の不足に悩んでいる。先生はこれを哀れんで、たまたま暇がある度に、山水や人物をはじめ、動物や器物に至るまで、随筆としてこれを描写し、版木に彫らせて門人たちに授け、初学者の階段となるようにした。その成果を重ねるにつれて、次第に編を成すようになった。第四編に及んで、私に序文を求められた。ここにおいてこれをよく見ると、前の三編は

There is nothing greater than books for expressing things. There is nothing better than painting for preserving forms. Thus spoke the ancients about their demeanor and the elegant qualities of ancient objects. Today, those who understand this do so through the wonders of pictorial art. Now Master Katsushika Hokusai is highly skilled in painting, and his reputation is great. Many people seek his paintings, and the people of Edo praise him for this. Being so, he has no time to put down his brush, and his disciples suffer from a lack of model works to copy. The master took pity on this, and whenever he happened to have leisure time, he would sketch everything from landscapes and figures to animals and utensils, have them carved into printing blocks, and give them to his disciples to serve as stepping stones for beginners.
