余昔客京知文鳳山人于絵事
臭味相投日夜不厭臨別山人出
其所図曰是非以為贈也請子携
帰為児女之玩葢山人之筆之最略而
最得意者展観間前者如言後者
如笑画之伝神在阿堵上挙坐称
現代語訳
私は昔、京都に滞在していた時に文鳳山人と知り合い、絵画について
趣味が合い、日夜飽きることなく語り合った。別れの際に山人が
その描いた絵を取り出して言うには「これは贈り物ではないが、どうか持ち
帰ってお子さんたちの玩具にしてください」と。思うに山人の筆致は最も簡略でありながら
最も得意とするものである。見ていると、前のものは言葉を発しているようで、後のものは
笑っているようである。絵画の神髄を伝えるのは目の表現にあり、皆座ったまま称賛した。
英語訳
In the past, when I was staying in Kyoto, I became acquainted with the literary figure Bunpō Sanjin, and we shared
similar tastes in painting matters, never tiring of our discussions day and night. Upon parting, Sanjin brought out
his drawings and said, "These are not intended as gifts, but please take them
back with you for your children's amusement." I think that Sanjin's brushwork, while being most simplified,
represents his greatest skill. When viewing them, the former figures seem to be speaking, while the latter ones
appear to be laughing. The essence of conveying spirit in painting lies in the eyes, and everyone praised them while remaining seated.
