琉球入貢紀略序【角印二つ】
海を隔てた外国で、風潮に従って我が国に朝貢するものに、琉球があり、朝鮮がある。琉球については、源為朝の末裔であるとして、まるで一つの家族のように見なしてきた。その後、使節の往来が途絶えることもあったが、島津氏が軍艦で西進して以来、完全に服従し、永く我が国の属国となった。それ以後は時に応じて朝廷に参上し、礼典を整備して、これを怠ることは決してなかった。すでに二百年余りが経つが、まことに盛んなことではないか。私は既に七十歳を超えたが、幸いにもその入貢の様子を親しく見ることができたのも、もう何度かになる。往年、その概要を述べて、入貢紀略一巻を作った。

Preface to the Record of Ryukyu Tribute Missions【Two square seals】
Beyond the seas, those who follow the prevailing winds and pay tribute to our country include Ryukyu and Korea. As for Ryukyu, considering them descendants of Minamoto no Tametomo, we have regarded them as if they were family. Later, diplomatic exchanges were sometimes interrupted, but since the Shimazu clan advanced westward with warships, they completely submitted and permanently became our vassal state. Since then, they have come to court from time to time, maintaining proper ceremonial protocols without ever neglecting them for over two hundred years. Is this not indeed a flourishing relationship? I am already over seventy years old, and I have been fortunate to personally witness their tribute missions several times. In past years, I wrote an outline of this and compiled one volume of "Record of Tribute Missions."
