いまはむかしたけとりのおきなといふもの有
けり野山にましりてたけをとりつゝよろつの
事につかひけり名をはさるきのみやつこと
なんいひける其竹の中にもとひかる竹なん
一すちありけりあやしかりてよりて見るに
つゝの中ひかりたりそれを見れは三すんはかり
なる人いとうつくしうて居たりおきな云やう
われ朝こと夕ことに見るたけの中におはする
にてしりぬ子になり給ふへき人なめりとて
手にうち入て家へもちてきぬめの女にあつ

今は昔、竹取の翁という者がいた。野山に入って竹を取り続け、あらゆることに使っていた。名前は讃岐の造となん言われていた。その竹の中でも、根元が光る竹が一筋あった。不思議に思って近寄って見ると、筒の中が光っていた。それを見ると、三寸ばかりの人がとても美しく座っていた。翁が言うことには「私が朝ごと夕ごとに見る竹の中にいらっしゃるので、きっと私の子になられるべき人であろう」と言って、手に取り入れて家へ持って来た。女房に預け

The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter
Long, long ago, there lived a man called the Bamboo Cutter. He would go into the fields and mountains to cut bamboo, using it for all manner of purposes. His name was said to be Sanuki no Miyatsuko. Among the bamboo he cut, there was one stalk whose base glowed with light. Finding this strange, he approached and looked, and saw that the inside of the hollow was glowing. When he looked inside, there sat a person about three inches tall, extremely beautiful.
