けさういといたくしてやかてとまりなんもの
そとおほしてうたよみくはへてもちていまし
たりそのうたは
かきりなき思ひにやけぬかはころも
たもとかはきてけふこそはきめ
といへり家の門にもていたりてたてり竹取出
きてとり入てかくやひめに見すかくやひめの
かは衣を見て云うるはしきかはなめりわきて
誠のかはならん共しらす竹取こたへていはく
ともあれかくもあれ先しやうし入奉らん世中
に見えぬかはきぬのさまなれは是をと思ひ給
現代語訳
今朝、美しく化粧をして、やがて亡くなってしまうであろうと思い、歌を詠み加えて持参いたしました。その歌は
限りなき思いに焼けぬ火鼠の裘
袖も乾きて今日こそは着め
と詠みました。家の門まで持参して立てかけておりました。竹取翁が出てきて取り入れて、かぐや姫に見せました。かぐや姫は火鼠の裘を見て言いました。「美しい裘のようですね。しかし本当に真の火鼠の裘かどうかはわかりません。」竹取翁が答えて言うには「ともかく、まずは少将様に差し上げましょう。世の中に見たことのない火鼠の裘の様子なので、これをお渡ししようと思います。」
英語訳
This morning, he beautified himself and, thinking that he would soon die, composed a poem and brought it with him. The poem was:
Burning endlessly with limitless longing for the fire-rat robe,
Even my sleeves have dried—today I shall finally wear it.
He brought it to the gate of the house and placed it there. The Bamboo Cutter came out, took it inside, and showed it to Princess Kaguya. Upon seeing the fire-rat robe, Princess Kaguya said, "It appears to be a beautiful robe. However, I cannot tell whether it is truly a genuine fire-rat robe." The Bamboo Cutter replied, "In any case, let us first present it to the Lesser Captain. Since it appears to be a fire-rat robe the likes of which has never been seen in this world, I think we should offer this to him."
