題辞
煙草が世に行われるようになって、一つの物に多くの名前があり、効能もあれば毒もあり、得もあれば失もある。当世の人々は茶に代わり酒に代わって日常的に用いて欠かすことがなく、これを敬愛するものとしている。大清の倪朱謨の『本草彙言』に曰く「北方の人は日常的に用いることを常とし、客が至ればすぐに煙草に火を点けて、これを奉じてその敬意を申し述べる」とある。ここに和漢土地は異なれども人情は同じであることを知る。近世、煙草について説く者は数え切れないほどいる。予はかつて見聞に従って抄出し、数十枚に及んだが、今その過半を国字（ひらがな）に改めて、児女の戯れ遊びに与えるものとし、名づけて『煙草記』という。

Preface
Since tobacco came into use in the world, one substance has many names, having both efficacy and toxicity, both benefits and harm. People of the present age use it daily as a substitute for tea and sake, never going without it, regarding it as something to be respected and loved. The "Bencao Huiyan" (Comprehensive Discussion of Materia Medica) by Ni Zhumo of the Great Qing states: "Northern people use it daily as a matter of course; when guests arrive, they immediately light tobacco and offer it to express their respect." Here we know that although Japan and China differ in land, human sentiments are the same. In recent times, those who discourse on tobacco are beyond counting. I once compiled excerpts based on what I saw and heard, amounting to several dozen pages, but now I have converted more than half into vernacular script (hiragana) to provide amusement for children and women, calling it the "Record of Tobacco."
