「ゼー・モンステル」

右の怪物は、その当時ちょうど「モンニキ」（僧官の名）のような姿をしており、その他の部分はすべて魚のように鱗や甲羅で覆われていた。「ロンゲルチウス」という人物が著した魚譜によれば、この生き物は雌雄ともに海中で目撃され、すぐに捕獲することができた。当時の人々はみなこれを「ゼー・モンニキ」と呼んだという。（「ゼー」は海、「モンニキ」は僧、すなわち「海の僧」という意味である。）

Though these things are strange, they are based on actual facts. Therefore, the illustrations have been copied, the descriptions translated, and recorded below for reference and verification. However, the illustrated descriptions of the male and female merfolk among them have already been published in the "Rokubutsu Shinshi" (New Records of Six Objects) by Master Bansui, and are therefore omitted here.

"Zee Monster"
(Meaning: a monster of the sea)

This monster, at the time, had an appearance very much like that of a "Monniki" (a title for a monastic official), while the rest of its body was entirely like a fish, covered with scales and a shell. According to a book on fish written by a person called "Rondeletius," this creature was observed in the sea as both male and female, and was promptly captured. The people of that time all called it "Zee Monniki." ("Zee" means sea; "Monniki" means monk — that is, it carries the meaning of "sea monk.")
