此怪物は「ヒイロニムス〃カルダヌス」
といふ人これを「ゲス子りュス」《割書：人｜名》
に送り示せり其形頭は熊
の如く手は獮猴のごとく其
他は皆魚のことしこれ「マセリ
イン」《割書：地｜名》の海中に於て得たる
所の者なりといふ

按するに此物また「ヲンスㇳンス」《割書：人の｜名》か魚譜にも其図説あり
図上に「ランテンンゴ」を以て記していはく「シミア〃マリナ〃ダニカ」
とすなはち第那瑪尓加（デヱ子マルカ）国海猴といへる義なり「エリアスオ」
といふ人の説を引ていはく此物西洋海に産すと又「ゲス子リ
ュす」の説をあけていはく此魚 第那瑪尓加（デイ子マルカ）国より送り輸せ
り其体緑色にして脊にハ黯色多く両側は青白色をな
す甚大にして空洞をなす眼の下より口にむかひて斜に
鰭のことき袋を毛る其皮肉頗る魚佀り和蘭呼て
「ゼエ〃アゝプ」といふと和蘭語「ゼエは海なり「アゝプ」は獮猴はり

この怪物は、「ヒエロニムス・カルダヌス」という人物が「ゲスナー」（人名）に送り示したものである。その形は、頭は熊のようで、手は猿のようであり、その他はすべて魚のようであるという。これは「マルセイユ」（地名）の海中において捕獲されたものだという。

考察するに、この生き物もまた「ヲンストンス」（人名）の魚譜にも図説がある。図の上にラテン語で「シミア・マリナ・ダニカ」と記されており、すなわち「デンマーク」国の海猿という意味である。「エリアス・オ（エリアス）」という人の説を引用して、この生き物は西洋の海に産すると述べている。また「ゲスナー」の説を挙げて、この魚はデンマーク国より送り届けられたものであると述べている。その体は緑色で、背には暗色が多く、両側は青白色をなす。甚だ大きく、空洞をなしている。目の下から口に向かって斜めに、鰭のような袋を持つ。その皮膚と肉は大変魚に似ており、オランダ語では「ゼー・アープ」と呼ぶという。オランダ語で「ゼー」は海であり、「アープ」は猿である。

### "Sea Monster"

This creature was sent and shown to "Gesner" (a person's name) by a man called "Hieronymus Cardanus." Its form is such that the head resembles a bear, the hands resemble a monkey, and all the rest is like a fish. It is said that this creature was obtained from the sea near "Marseille" (a place name).

Upon examination, this creature also appears with an illustrated description in the fish catalog of "Johnstone" (a person's name). On the figure, it is recorded in Latin as "Simia Marina Danica," meaning "the sea monkey of Denmark." Citing the account of a person called "Elias O(laus?)," it states that this creature is found in the western seas. Furthermore, citing the account of "Gesner," it is stated that this fish was sent and transported from Denmark. Its body is green in color, with much dark coloring along the back, and the sides are bluish-white. It is very large and hollow in form. From below the eyes toward the mouth, it bears a bag-like fin set diagonally. Its skin and flesh closely resemble those of a fish, and in Dutch it is called "Zee-Aap." In Dutch, "Zee" means sea, and "Aap" means monkey.
