鹿島神宮からナマズ共一同へのお達しの件

一、ナマズ共について、古来より申し渡してある通り、「九は病気、五七が雨に、四つ日照り、六つ八つならば風と知るべし」との御詠歌を守り、時候順調の折を見計らって質素に暮らすべきところ、諸神が出雲へご出仕されたその留守に、先例の掟に背き、御府内近在ともに乱暴を働き、家屋や蔵、人の身体を揺すり散らすばかりでなく、同類の出火を引き起こし、特別な風もないのに数か所を焼き払った段、八百万の神を恐れない仕方、言語道断である。よって四つ手網をもって一匹も漏らさずすくい上げ、蒲焼き所において大通りで火炙りにも処すべきところ、格別の御慈悲をもって日本六十余州追放を申し付けるものである。もしもこの後、お構い場所へ立ち寄り、いたずらがましいことがあった場合は、早速地引き網でからめ取り、必ず酒の肴として料理すべきものである。

Proclamation from Kashima Shrine to All Catfish

Article One: Regarding the catfish, as has been decreed since ancient times, you are to observe the sacred verse: "Nine brings illness, five and seven bring rain, four brings drought, six and eight bring wind," and live modestly while watching for favorable seasonal conditions. However, while the various deities were away serving at Izumo, you violated the established precedents and committed outrages both in the capital and surrounding areas. Not only did you shake houses, storehouses, and people's bodies, but you also induced fires among your kind, burning down several locations despite there being no particular wind. This behavior shows no fear of the eight million gods and is absolutely outrageous. Therefore, you should all be caught without exception using four-pronged nets and grilled over fires on the main street at the eel-grilling shops. However, out of special mercy, you are hereby banished from all sixty-odd provinces of Japan. Should you hereafter approach any prohibited areas and commit mischievous acts, you will immediately be captured with seine nets and certainly prepared as drinking accompaniments.
