現代語訳

【上段】
十一月四日朝五つ時（午前八時頃）に大地震があり、
府中より先の宿場において
丸子、岡部、宇津ノ谷峠が荒れ、
藤枝、島田宿、大井川その
他の川々が通行止めとなり、金谷、日坂峠が大いに
荒れた。掛川の城下が揺り潰れ
焼け、袋井、見附辺りが強く揺れ、
浜松、舞坂辺りまでも大変な
状況であった。ここに同日五つ半時（午前九時頃）、
伊豆七島、下田に津波が
五丈ほど（約15メートル）の大山が崩れる
ように押し寄せ、家千軒ほどが押し流
され、大船五十艘、小舟は
その数を知れず流された。
浦賀、大津、金沢、
また沼津の
浜辺、いずれも大津波にて
人家の損失は
大変なものであった。往古
より地震と
津波の類いは聞き
伝えるといえども、
かかる大きなものは
聞いたことがない。よって
詳細をここに記す。

○信州大地震
信州松本で大地震があり、
崩れや大火により、
飯田、松代、
善光寺辺り
までその
響きは大変なもので、
人馬の
怪我も多く、
その
数は知れない。

【下段】
同月四日朝五つ時、昼夜何度も
大きく震え、天満天神が大きく崩れ、堂島
辺り、西寺町、金毘羅様が崩れ、五百羅漢
堂が崩れ、羅漢様が堂の外へ飛び出し、浜
橋、人家が大きく崩れ、南御堂が大きく
損傷し、天王寺の六時堂、骨堂前、花立石が
大きく損傷し、高津辺りが崩れ、玉造口二軒茶屋一丁
ばかり東へ崩れ、この辺り東西南北で損傷した場所はその数
知れず。道頓堀芝居が大きく損傷し、住吉の石灯籠が
残らず崩れ、天下茶屋の塀回りが崩れ、長堀佐野屋橋東へ入った
長屋が大きく崩れ住めなくなり、順慶町丼池の人家が大きく崩れ、
二間ばかり残り住めなくなり、帯屋町の大土蔵、鳩蔵が
大きく崩れ、見る人も目を当てられない有様である。
その他町々の崩壊、神社仏閣の崩れた場所は数え切れない。
中でも諸々の大名様の蔵屋敷が大きく崩れ、それから
日暮れ六つ時（午後六時頃）、大津波が西南方より泉尾新田、勘助島、千鳥洲新田、木津川筋、安治川口、富島辺りに、大津波が五丈程（約15メートル）の大山が崩れるように往来に打ち上がり、大舟小舟がぶつかり合い崩れることが数え切れず、
流れ死する人は幾万とも数知れず。落ちた橋は
亀井橋、安治川橋、国津橋、水分橋、黒
金橋、高橋、日吉橋、汐見橋、
金屋橋、大黒橋にて止まる。それから大和路、奈良の
町々が大きく損傷し、春日様の社が崩れ、鳥居、
金灯籠が崩れ落ちた。兵庫は家七、
八軒が崩れ、伊丹、池田の辺りは大地震であった
けれども崩れた家はなし。柏原村が大きく
崩れ出火に及んだ。西宮などは大坂と同
様で、誠に前代未聞の珍事であるゆえ、諸方
への文通に知らせようとここに詳しく記す。

【Upper Section】
On the 4th day of the 11th month at the hour of the Snake in the morning (around 8 AM), there was a great earthquake, and at the post stations beyond Fuchu:
Mariko, Okabe, and Utsu-no-ya Pass were devastated,
Fujieda, Shimada post station, the Oi River and
other rivers were blocked, Kanaya and Nissaka Pass were greatly
damaged. Kakegawa castle town was shaken and collapsed,
burned, and the Fukuroi and Mitsuke areas shook violently.
Even Hamamatsu and Maisaka areas suffered
extraordinary damage. At the same time on the same day at half past the Snake hour (around 9 AM),
at the Izu Seven Islands and Shimoda, tsunami waves
about 5 jo high (approximately 15 meters) came crashing down like
a great mountain collapsing, washing away
about a thousand houses, fifty large ships, and small boats
beyond counting.
Uraga, Otsu, Kanazawa,
and also the beaches
of Numazu - all
suffered great tsunami
damage to houses
beyond measure. Since ancient
times, earthquakes
and tsunami have been
heard of in tradition, but
such a great one has
never been heard of. Therefore
I record the details here.

○Great Earthquake in Shinano Province
There was a great earthquake in Matsumoto, Shinano Province,
with great collapse and
fires. Iida, Matsushiro,
and around
Zenkoji Temple
all felt its
tremendous impact.
Many people and horses
were injured,
the number
being unknown.

【Lower Section】
On the same 4th day of the month at the morning Snake hour, shaking greatly many times day and night,
Tenman Tenjin shrine collapsed greatly, around Dojima,
Nishi-tera-machi, Konpira shrine collapsed, the Five Hundred Rakan
hall collapsed with the Rakan statues flying out of the hall, Hama
bridge and houses collapsed greatly, Minami-mido temple was greatly
damaged, Tennoji's Rokuji-do hall, the Kotsu hall front, and flower-stand stones
were greatly damaged, the Takatsu area collapsed, at Tamatsukuri-guchi the Niken-chaya area for about one cho
collapsed eastward. In this area, the number of places damaged in all four directions
is beyond counting. The Dotonbori theaters were greatly damaged, Sumiyoshi's stone lanterns
all collapsed without exception, Tenka-chaya's fence surroundings collapsed, east of Nagahori Sanoya Bridge
the long houses collapsed greatly making them uninhabitable, houses in Junkeimachi Donburiike collapsed greatly with
only about two ken remaining and uninhabitable, the great storehouses and pigeon houses in Obiyamachi
collapsed greatly - the sight was too terrible for observers to bear.
The collapse of other towns and the destruction of shrines and temples was countless.
Especially the warehouse residences of various daimyo lords collapsed greatly, and then
at dusk at the Rooster hour (around 6 PM), great tsunami from the southwest hit Izuo-shinden, Kansuke-jima, Chidorisu-shinden, along Kizu River, Aji River mouth, and Tomishima area. The great tsunami, about 5 jo high (approximately 15 meters) like a great mountain collapsing, surged onto the streets, and large and small boats crashed into each other and were destroyed beyond counting.
The number of people who died in the flood was countless tens of thousands. The bridges that fell were:
Kamei Bridge, Aji River Bridge, Kokuzu Bridge, Mizuwake Bridge, Kuro-
kane Bridge, Taka Bridge, Hiyoshi Bridge, Shiomi Bridge,
Kanaya Bridge, stopping at Daikoku Bridge. From there, along the Yamato road, Nara's
towns were greatly damaged, Kasuga shrine's buildings collapsed, torii gates and
gold lanterns collapsed and fell. In Hyogo, seven or
eight houses collapsed. Around Itami and Ikeda there was a great earthquake
but no houses collapsed. Kashiwabara village collapsed greatly
and caught fire. Nishinomiya and other places were the same as
Osaka. Since this was truly an unprecedented extraordinary event, I record this in detail
to inform various places through correspondence.

Shikoku without exception had great
earthquakes and great tsunamis
causing damage.
Especially Awa
Province's Tokushima castle town
was greatly
damaged, and Suma,
Akashi, and Ako
beaches had great
tsunamis.
Himeji castle town
was also damaged, and other
collapsed
places and places
swept away
by tsunami
are countless.
