【右丁】
ヒオウギ　山中に自生もある。また人家に栽培して花を観賞する。春に古い根から苗を生じる。形は鳶尾（イチハツ）の葉のようで厚く長い。互生で斜めに並び、平たく生える。扇を開いたような形に似ている。その中心から一本の茎を出し、六七月に至って高さ三四尺、梢に小枝を分けて花を開く。大きさ二寸ほどで六弁、三弁が大きく三弁は小さい。皆細長く、内側は赤黄色に濃い朱色の斑点があり、外側は黄色で凌霄（ノウゼン）の花色によく似ている。その紅色のものを「ベニヒオウギ」といい、黄色のものを「キヒオウギ」という。共に斑点のないものを珍重する。花の後に莢を生じる。三角形で先端が大きい。直径六七分、長さ一寸余り、基部は細い。熟して莢が破れると黒い種子が殻につく。大きさは山椒の実のようで光沢がある。深秋に苗が枯れる。一種で短小なものがあり、一二尺を超えない。これを俗に「マナガツホ」という。

Hiōgi　Also grows wild in mountains. People also cultivate it in their homes to appreciate the flowers. In spring it produces seedlings from old roots. The shape is like iris leaves, thick and long. They grow alternately, arranged diagonally and flat. It resembles the shape of an opened fan. From the center it extends one stem, and by the sixth or seventh month it reaches a height of 3-4 shaku, branching at the tip and opening flowers. About 2 sun in size with six petals - three large and three small. All are elongated, with reddish-yellow interior having dark vermillion spots, while the exterior is yellow, closely resembling the flower color of nōzen (Chinese trumpet vine). The red variety is called "beni-hiōgi" and the yellow variety "ki-hiōgi." Those without spots are particularly prized. After flowering it produces pods. Triangular in shape with a large tip. Diameter of 6-7 bu, length over 1 sun, with a narrow base. When ripe the pod splits open and black seeds stick to the shell. The size is like sansho (Japanese pepper) berries with a glossy appearance. In late autumn the seedlings wither. There is one variety that is short and small, not exceeding 1-2 shaku. This is commonly called "managatsuho."

△Primary properties　Bitter, balanced, with slight toxicity. Eliminates phlegm and promotes urination and defecation.
