【右丁】
桔梗　山中に自然に多く生育する。日当たりの良い野原にもある。春に古い根から苗を生じる。沙参（ツリガネニンジン）に似ているが毛がなく、これを切ると白い汁が出る。円い茎で高さは三尺、あるいは四五尺にもなる。葉は楕円形で細かい鋸歯があり、互生する。また二枚が対生したり、三五枚が対生するものもある。六月以後に茎の頭に一花をつける。肥えたものは葉の間ごとに花がある。一重で筒形、末端が五弁に分かれ、弁の先端は尖り、藍紫色である。花後に円い莢を生じる。大きさは無患子（ムクロジ）ほどあり、中に細かい種子が多い。実が熟すと苗は枯れる。また園芸品種に多くの種類がある。紋桔梗というものがあり、一重で通常より筒が浅く花が平たい。濃紫と薄紫の二色がある。また二重になるものがあり（紫白の二品がある）、八重があり、千重がある（紫白の二品がある）。円く平たくて千重のものがある（濃藍・浅藍の二品がある）。また形が押し潰されて平たいようで、茎も平たいものがある（単弁・重弁・濃藍・浅藍・濃黄・浅黄・白等の数品がある）。白花に紫の斑点があるものを仙台桔梗という。また牡丹桔梗があり、花が大きく重弁である。

Kikyō (Platycodon grandiflorus)　Grows naturally and abundantly in the mountains. Also found in sunny fields. In spring produces seedlings from old roots. Resembles shashin (Adenophora triphylla) but lacks hairs, and when cut, white sap emerges. Round stem reaching 3 shaku in height, sometimes 4-5 shaku. Leaves are oval with fine serrated edges, growing alternately. Some have two leaves growing opposite each other, or 3-5 leaves growing opposite. From the sixth month onward, produces one flower at the stem tip. Well-nourished plants have flowers between each set of leaves. Single-flowered, tubular form with the tip divided into five petals, petal tips pointed, blue-purple in color. After flowering produces round pods about the size of soapberries (mukuroji), containing many fine seeds. When the fruit ripens, the plant withers. There are also many cultivated varieties. There is one called mon-kikyō, single-flowered with a shallower tube than usual and flatter flowers. Comes in two colors: deep purple and light purple. There are also double-flowered varieties (available in purple and white), semi-double, and fully double varieties (available in purple and white). Round, flat, fully double varieties exist (available in deep blue and light blue). There are also forms that appear compressed and flattened, with flattened stems as well (available in several varieties: single and double petals, deep blue, light blue, deep yellow, light yellow, white, etc.). White flowers with purple spots are called Sendai-kikyō. There is also botan-kikyō with large, double flowers.
