女郎花　人家に多く栽培される。また山中に自生するものもある。春に古い根から苗を生じる。葉の形は玉帚（タマボウキ）に似て叢生する。茎は円く、高さ三四尺で、節に対して葉を生じる。切れ込みが深く、梢に至ると細くなり、艾の先端の葉のようである。山中のものは小さく、人家に栽培するものは肥大になり、別種のようである。六七月に梢に花が簇生する。開かないものは粟粒のように細く、深黄色である。開くものは五弁で直径一分ほど、色は浅く臭気がある。一種で五月に花を咲かせるものがあり、梅雨咲きという。また一種でハルノオミナエシというものがある。一名カノコソウ、キヌマキ、サクラガワグサ。これに二種ある。通常のものに似て小葉が薄く尖っており、三月に花が開く。紅白が混じるためカノコソウという。一種は小草で尺ほど、花も葉も共に小さい。深山幽谷に多い。俗にカンショウというのは誤りである。また一種で加州の白山から出るモミジバノオミナエシがある。一名ハクサンオミナエシ、園芸では金鈴花という。円い葉で四つに分かれた鋸歯があり、カエデの葉の形に似て対生する。茎の高さは尺ほどで、五月に深黄色の花を開く。花は大きい。

△主な効能　微苦甘平で毒はない。産後の諸病に効果がある。

Ominaeshi (Patrinia scabiosifolia)　Commonly cultivated in homes. Also grows wild in the mountains. In spring produces seedlings from old roots. Leaf shape resembles tamabōki (a type of broom) and grows in clusters. Round stem, 3-4 shaku in height, producing leaves at the nodes. Deeply lobed, becoming fine toward the tips like the terminal leaves of mugwort. Mountain varieties are small, while those cultivated at homes become large and robust, appearing like different species. In the 6th-7th months, flowers cluster at the branch tips. Unopened buds are fine like millet grains and deep yellow in color. Open flowers have five petals about 1 bu in diameter, light in color with a distinctive odor. One variety blooms in the 5th month, called tsuyu-zaki (rainy season bloomer). Another variety is called haru-no-ominaeshi (spring ominaeshi), also known as kanokosō, kinumaki, or sakuragawa-gusa. This has two types. Resembles the common type but with thinner, pointed leaflets, flowering in the 3rd month. Called kanokosō because red and white colors are mixed. One variety is a small herb about 1 shaku tall with small flowers and leaves. Common in deep mountains and secluded valleys. The folk name kanshō is incorrect. Another variety from Mount Hakusan in Kaga Province is called momijiba-no-ominaeshi, also known as hakusan-ominaeshi or kinreika in horticulture. Has round leaves with four-lobed serrated edges resembling maple leaves, growing oppositely. Stem about 1 shaku tall, opening deep yellow flowers in the 5th month. Flowers are large.
