現代語訳

【右丁】
玉蜀黍（ナンバンキビ）　人家で多く畑に栽培する。形はタカキビに似ているが短く、茎は太い。三月頃に種子を播く。成長すると六七尺に及ぶ。梢の頭部に穂を生じ、枝を分けて花を咲かせる。雄しべのみで花弁はなく、下に垂れ下がる。稲の花に似ている。葉の間ごとに苞を生じ、上に紅い糸があって下垂する。また白い毛のものもある。苞の中に実を結ぶこと数百粒で、豆の大きさで長い軸に環状につく。形は連珠のようである。長さ六七寸、直径一寸半ほど。粒が赤いものがあり、もち性である。ポップコーンにして最も美味しい。黄色いものがあり、うるち性である。白いものがあり、味は劣る。摂津国尼崎でシロナンバンと言う。また赤白が混じったものがあり、紫白が混じったものがある。これをタイマイナンバンと言う。また白い粒で細い赤筋があるものがあり、また黄色で大粒なものがある。苗もまた長大である。備中では四国でナンバと言う。ともに晩秋に苗が枯れる。

△主な効能　甘く平性で毒はない。中焦を調え、胃を開き、水腫を治す。小児は多く食べてはならない。

Corn (Nanbankibi)　Commonly cultivated in household fields. The form resembles sorghum but is shorter with a thicker stem. Seeds are planted around the third month. When grown, it reaches 6-7 shaku in height. It produces spikes at the top of the shoot, branching and producing flowers. These have only stamens without petals, hanging downward. They resemble rice flowers. Between each leaf it produces husks with red silk hanging down from above. There are also those with white silk. Inside the husks, it produces several hundred grains the size of beans, attached in rings around a long axis. The shape is like a string of beads. Length is 6-7 sun, diameter about 1.5 sun. There are varieties with red grains that are glutinous. These make the best popped corn. There are yellow varieties that are non-glutinous. There are white varieties that are inferior in taste. In Amagasaki, Settsu Province, they call this shiro-nanban. There are also varieties with mixed red and white, and mixed purple and white. These are called taimai-nanban. There are also varieties with white grains having thin red streaks, and others that are yellow with large grains. The seedlings are also large. In Bitchū and Shikoku they call it nanba. All varieties wither in late autumn.

△Primary properties　Sweet and neutral-natured, non-toxic. Regulates the middle burner, opens the stomach, and treats edema. Children should not eat too much.
