当薬　山中ノ陽地ニ多ク深山ニ少シ小草ナリ春苗ヲ生
　ズハジメ地ニツキタル葉ハ幅広ク馬歯莧（スベリビユ）ノ葉ノ如ク

現代語訳

【右丁】
当薬　山中の陽地に多く、深山には少ない。小さな草である。春に苗を生じ、初めに地についている葉は幅広く、スベリヒユの葉のようで先が尖っている。秋に中心から茎を出して対生する。茎につく葉は細く、ナデシコの葉を小さくしたようである。長さは一寸ほど、幅一分ほど。表面は深緑色、裏面と茎は紫色である。高さは一尺に満たず、痩せたものは二三寸である。八九月に茎の頭部から枝を分けて数個の花をつける。大きさは六分ほど、六弁で先が尖り、白色で紫色の縦筋があって美しい。また青色のものもある。ともに花の後に細かい種子を生じる。冬になると苗もろとも枯れる。実が落ちて自然に生える。この草は甚だ苦く、何度湯で煎じ出しても苦味が減らないため、センブリと言う。

Tōyaku (Swertia)　Abundant in sunny places in mountains, less common in deep mountains. It is a small herb. In spring it produces seedlings; the leaves that first touch the ground are broad, like purslane leaves but with pointed tips. In autumn it sends up a central stem with opposite leaves. The leaves attached to the stem are narrow, like small carnation leaves. Length about one sun, width about one bu. The surface is deep green, while the back and stem are purple. Height is less than one shaku; thin specimens are 2-3 sun tall. In the eighth and ninth months, branches divide from the stem head and produce several flowers. Size about six bu, six petals with pointed tips, white with beautiful purple vertical stripes. There are also blue-colored varieties. Both produce fine seeds after flowering. In winter both seedlings and all parts die. The seeds fall and grow naturally. This herb is extremely bitter - no matter how many times it is boiled and extracted, the bitter taste does not diminish, hence it is called senburi (thousand boils).
