この書は和漢古今の事跡あるいは俗習の迷いを弁じ、また人々の行いにおけるあるいは先後相似たるものをこれと彼とを集め録して後学の便とする。その余見聞の及ぶ所、みだりに褒貶を加え愚意を述べたり。故に漫筆の名を負ってもって婦女童蒙の目覚ましの種とする。

この書は部を四時に分って熟語・韻字・故事・佳句あるいは作例を間々附したれば、いずれの詩によらず四時に属するものは巻を開いて一覧すれば立ちどころに佳作を得ん。もっとも懐中便利なる為なれば、薄葉仕立ては言うに及ばず半紙本も薄様同様に仕立てあれば、その便利言うべからざる袖珍本である。
