玩弄すれば玉のように、上達速やかなることは遺風絶塵の如し。かつ方今、大詩宗となって世に鳴らんと志す君子もまた、求めて取用すれば、その玉作に許多の光耀を増さん。実に詩家必用の書たり。

《明史三伝　忠義・孝義・列女　全六冊》
明の末に至りて兵乱打ち続き、正道廃せんと欲するの時、忠臣・孝士・列女の出づる有りし彼の世なり。本朝永禄・慶長の前後に当たるが故に朝鮮の役有りて、明の援兵と接戦の事有り。この書は、その時代中華の人々の伝及び、かの忠臣・孝士・列女の行状を、明史中より荘飾を加えずして、全文の儘を挙げて以て、忠孝・節列の麗名を遠くここに伝う。その文正しく章をなして意もまた了解やすき、真の実録たれば、諸君これを熟読して常に茗談卮言となさば、子弟自然に感発して忠孝・節列の美志を増加せん。実に大家の奇宝とすべき近世の珍書なり。

古来より詩作に通用する熟語は限りありて、およそ六千余字には過ぎずと雖も、大家なお其の半を諳んぜず。故に万篇に富んで一字に窘むは詩家の通患なり。況んや浅学薄識の徒に至りては、詩材詩字に窮してややもすれば字林・字彙・玉篇等によりて不熟の字面を引用して固陋の謗りを招く。今この書は其の患いを救わん為に編次したれば、臨時に入用の字を求めんと欲せば、その字画を算して巻を開けば、四声の内何の韻ということを記し、字義を正し、平仄異同両韻通用の例を弁じ、その下に熟語の有らん限りを集む。たとえば一の字なれば一春・一花、また第一・専一などと上下両様に分かちて、二字より四字に至り、解し難きは全句を挙げ平仄を分かち訓訳を施す。その出拠は佩文韻府・淵鑑類函等の外、唐宋明清諸名家の集中より新奇雅馴の字を選び出したれば、幼学のみならず博識宏覧の士たりとも座右に備えて副急の要書なり。佩文韻府は詩家の和璧なれども価十五城に過ぎ、かつ巻秩浩大、捜索に便ならず。

Since ancient times, the familiar phrases used in poetry composition are limited, not exceeding approximately six thousand characters. However, even great masters do not memorize half of them. Therefore, being rich in ten thousand poems yet troubled by a single character is a common affliction of poets. How much more so for those of shallow learning and limited knowledge, who, lacking poetic materials and characters, tend to rely on dictionaries like Zilin, Zihui, and Yupian, using unfamiliar character combinations and inviting criticism for being narrow and crude. When one wishes to seek a needed character at the moment, by calculating its stroke count and opening the volume, it records which rhyme category within the four tones it belongs to, corrects the character meaning, distinguishes examples of level-tone and oblique-tone differences and common usage between rhyme categories, and below that collects all possible familiar phrases. For example, for the character "one" (一), it divides into both upper and lower positions like "one spring," "one flower," "first," "exclusively one," etc., ranging from two to four characters. Its sources, besides Peiwen Yunfu and Yuanjian Leihan, select novel and elegantly familiar characters from the collected works of famous masters of Tang, Song, Ming, and Qing dynasties. Therefore, not only for beginning students but even for scholars of extensive knowledge and broad learning, it is an essential reference book to keep at hand for urgent needs. While Peiwen Yunfu is like the He Bi jade disc for poets, its price exceeds fifteen cities, and moreover, its massive volumes make searching inconvenient.
