現代語訳

【右丁】
千日紅　人家に栽培して花を観賞する。もとは外国産の種である。春の彼岸の後に
　種を蒔く。育てやすい。葉の形は柿の葉のようで細長く
　やわらかである。長さ三、四寸、幅一寸ほど。対生する。茎に葉が付く
　ところが太く膨れて淡紅色をしており、牛膝（イノコヅチ）の茎のようである。高さは
　二、三尺。夏、葉の間で枝を分け、先端に一つの花を付ける。肥えたものは
　三つの花を付けることもある。紅紫色で細かい花弁である。形は楊梅（ヤマモモ）のようで
　大きい。初めは円いが、成長するにつれて徐々に長くなり、一寸余りに至る。
　冬になって苗の根が枯れた後まで花の色は変わることがない。花弁の中に実を
　結ぶ。細長い。栽培するとよく育つ。一種で淡紅花のものがある。また
　白花のものもある。形は皆同じである。

【Right page】
Globe amaranth　Cultivated in homes for flower appreciation. Originally a foreign species. Seeds are sown after the spring equinox.
　Easy to grow. The leaf shape is like persimmon leaves, elongated and
　soft. Length is three to four sun, width about one sun. Leaves are opposite. Where leaves attach to the
　stem is thick and swollen, pale red in color, resembling the stem of Achyranthes (Inokozuchi). Height is
　two to three shaku. In summer, branches divide between the leaves, bearing one flower at the tip. Well-nourished plants may
　bear three flowers. Purple-red color with fine petals. The shape resembles yangmei (Japanese bayberry) and is
　large. Initially round, but gradually becomes longer as it matures, reaching over one sun in length.
　Even after the plant roots wither in winter, the flower color does not change. Seeds form
　within the petals. They are elongated. Grows well when cultivated. There is one variety with pale red flowers. There are also
　white-flowered varieties. All have the same shape.
