小人島は日本では珍しく、そこら辺りを見歩いていたが、大風が吹いてきて虚空へ吹き上げ、裏の井戸の中へ吹き落とした。朝比奈は大事な代物を失くしては面白くないと慌てふためき、助けようと思えども、急に手段のない折から、手長島が「ここそ我が技量を見せる場」と少しも騒がず、片肌脱いで井戸へ手を差し延べ、何の苦もなくつまみ出す。この時みな皆、手長島を感心しない者はなかった。
