立行（タチユク）事あり至（イタツ）て足（アシ）はやし人皆是を竜（リウ）宮（クウ）の人なりといふ此｜海小僧（ウミコゾウ）海上に顕（アラワ）るヽ時は必ちかき内に大風｜吹（フク）とて諸人｜恐（ヲソ）れ用意（ヨウイ）をなす果（ハタ）していつも大風吹也しかれは海中に人なしとも云｜難（ガタ）し是いか成物にや 対曰｜幽明（ユウメイ）相隔（アイヘダツル）事なき時は万物しらすと 云事なし又｜無（ナキ）といふ事もなし陸生（リクセウ）と いへとも水生（スイセウ）に似（二）たる物あり是｜類（タグヒ）にして
海中にも人のごとき物も有物也｜観物篇（クワンブツヘン） に邵子（セウシ）￣ガ曰￣ク嘗（カツ）て海賈（カイコ）に聞（キク）に南海（ナンカイ）に海人（カイジン）と いふ物あつて出（イヅ）其｜形（カタチ）僧（ソウ）のごとくにして頗（スコフル）ちい さし舟（フネ）に登（ノボツ）て座（ザ）す舟人是を制（セイ）すれ ども寂然（セキゼン）として騒（サワ）がず少頃（シバラク）ありて又水に 沈（シヅ）む若（モシ）寂然（セキゼン）とする事なく騒（サワ）がしき時は 大風舟を翻（ヒルカヘス）とあり是｜海（ウミ）小僧の事なり 是等（コレラ）は皆（ミナ）海中（カイチウ）の物にして家居（イヘヰ）あるといふ
現代語訳
（海小僧は）立って歩くこともあり、足が非常に速い。人々は皆、これを龍宮の人だと言う。この海小僧が海上に現れる時は、必ず近いうちに大風が吹くとして、人々は皆恐れて用心する。果たして、いつも大風が吹く。それゆえ、海中に人がいないとも言い難い。これはいかなる物であるか。
答えて曰く：幽冥の世界と現世とが互いに隔たりのない時は、万物について知られていないということはなく、また「存在しない」ということもない。陸に生きる者といえども、水中に生きる者に似た物があり、これと同類として、海中にも人のような物がいるものである。
『観物篇』に、邵子（邵雍）が曰く、かつて海の商人に聞いたところ、南海に「海人」という物があって現れる。その形は僧のようで、かなり小さい。舟に登って座るが、舟人がこれを制止しようとしても、静かに騒がない。しばらくすると、また水中に沈む。もし静かにせず騒がしい時は、大風が舟をひっくり返す、とある。これが海小僧のことである。
これらは皆、海中の生き物であって、住処があるという。
英語訳
(The "Sea Boy" [Umi-kozō]) walks upright and moves with great speed. Everyone says it is a person from the Dragon Palace (Ryūgū). When this Sea Boy appears on the surface of the sea, people fear that a great storm will soon blow and make preparations. Indeed, a great storm always follows. Therefore, one cannot easily say that no people exist in the sea. What manner of creature might this be?
In answer: When there is no barrier between the hidden world and the visible world, there is nothing that cannot be known about the ten thousand things, nor is there anything that can be said not to exist. Even among land-dwelling creatures, there are those that resemble water-dwelling ones; and by the same token, in the sea there are things that resemble humans.
In the *Guanwu Pian* (Discourse on Observing Things), Master Shao [Shao Yong] says: "I once heard from a sea merchant that in the Southern Sea there is a creature called the 'sea person' (kaijin). It appears in a form resembling a Buddhist monk, but quite small. It climbs aboard a boat and sits down; even when the boatmen try to stop it, it remains calm and undisturbed. After a short while, it sinks back into the water. If, however, it is not calm and makes a disturbance, a great wind will capsize the boat." This is precisely what the Sea Boy is.
All these are creatures of the sea, and it is said that they have dwellings [there].
