芃蘭（くはんらん）
【囲みの外】蘿摩（らま）は鏡草ともいう。蔓草である。六七月、鈴なりになって淡紫の
小さい花が咲く。百合に似ているが星がなく、五枚の花弁で花托がある。
草丈の立ち方や葉も屁糞葛のようである。この草は折って見れば
乳汁が出る。また屁糞葛は乳汁がない。花が開き、晩秋に実を結ぶ。紙麻殻
に似ている。初冬に至って自然に割れ、白い綿が出る。その殻は小舟のようである。長さは大きな
ものは二三寸ほど、小さなものは一寸余りである。これは神書にいわゆる少彦名神が蘿麻殻を以て
舟としたという。少名彦神を描く絵に用いるべきものはちこれである。

がある。葉は普通のぎぼうしと変わらないが、花は雪白で
丈が伸び、簪のようで至極見事である。一種、葉が極めて細
長く艶があるものもあり、花はきんらんと同じで、花の色は白
もあり藤色もある。大ぎぼうしは高さ四尺ばかり、小ぎぼうしは土地に
よっていろいろある。山草である。

【Outside the box】Rama is also called mirror grass. It is a vine. In June and July, it produces clusters of small, pale purple flowers. Similar to lilies but without stars, having five petals and a receptacle. The growth habit of the stems and the leaves are like those of Paederia scandens (hekuso-kazura). When this plant is broken and examined, milky sap comes out. Hekuso-kazura, however, has no milky sap. It blooms and bears fruit in late autumn. It resembles paper hemp pods. In early winter, they split naturally and white cotton emerges. The pods are like small boats. The large ones are about 2-3 sun in length, while the small ones are just over 1 sun. This is what is referred to in sacred texts as the Sukunahikona deity using rama pods as boats. This is exactly what should be used when painting Sukunahikona deity.

The leaves are no different from ordinary gibōshi, but the flowers are snow white, growing tall like hairpins and extremely beautiful. One variety has extremely narrow, long, glossy leaves, with flowers like kinran, in white or wisteria colors. Large gibōshi grows to about 4 shaku in height, while small gibōshi varies by location. It is a mountain plant.
