【囲みの外】葉は厚くて艶があり、葉先は尖っていて、茎の元に切れ込みがある。茎は太く、葉は見事である。花もまた厚くて艶がある。銀梅草の花を厚くしたようである。黄紅色があり、紅といっても咲き始めは黄色で、花が盛りを過ぎるにしたがって紅色が出てくる。姫河骨という草丈の低いものがある。極めて小さく、花も葉も同じである。また真紅梅というものがあり、花の内側が赤く、外側が黄色である。

【囲みの外】花の種類は数多い。四季咲きがあり、鼠色、白、紫がある。地紫に白の斑入りがあり、鷲の尾という。地白に紫の細かい紋様が一面に入ったものを舞鶴という。地は藍桔梗のようで、花は格別に大輪がある。濡絹という白い六弁がある。紫の六弁がある。大八つ橋というのも色は紫で、花は優れて大輪である。村雲というのは地が薄鼠色に紫の絞りが少し入る。これにも六弁がある。一種、摂津国吹田辺りに花があり、色は舞鶴のようで、花びら一面に細かい紋様が入り、見事である。その他、縦絞り、立ち違いなどもある。すべてを述べるのに暇がない。

大白がある。淡紅、白、薄紅、底白、内紅がある。大紫、中紫、薄紫、白、薄紫がある。底赤がある。中の香りに大白がある。大黄、大白銀絞りという。大黄金絞りという。中紫で縁が黄色なのを錦立という。また牡丹に似たものを牡丹立という。ただ香りが短く小さいものを上品とし、大きなものを下品とする。また中心に実が牡丹のように三つ立ち、五つ立ちし、地面から芽が出て、色は赤く、丈が伸びること二、三尺になるものを良しとする。葉も枝も重い木に寄り添って天に向かって立つ。葉には三つの枝があり、九葉、七葉、五葉、三葉がある。また先端を五葉にして、根元に二葉が両方向き合っているものがある。

芍薬は中岳の川谷及び丘陵に生ずる。今はあちこちにある。准南のものが優れている。春に紅い芽を生じて叢を作る。茎の上に三枝五葉があり、牡丹に似ているが狭く長い。高さは一、二尺。夏の初めに花を開く。紅、白、紫の数種がある。実は牡丹に似ているが少し小さい。秋の時期に根を採る。根もまた赤白の二色がある。崔豹の古今注に言う。芍薬には二種ある。草芍薬と木芍薬がある。木のものは花が大きくて色が深い。俗に牡丹と呼ぶが、それは間違いである。

【Outside the box】The leaves are thick and glossy, with pointed leaf tips and incisions at the base of the stem. The stem is thick and the leaves are magnificent. The flowers are also thick and glossy, resembling thickened silver plum grass flowers. They have a yellow-red color; though called red, they begin blooming yellow and turn red as the flowers pass their prime. There is a variety called hime-kōbone (princess yellow pond-lily) that grows low to the ground. It is extremely small, with flowers and leaves alike. There is also one called shin-kureami with red inside the flowers and yellow outside.

【Outside the box】There are many varieties of flowers. Some bloom in four seasons, with mouse-gray, white, and purple colors. There are ground-purple varieties with white spots, called "eagle's tail." Those with white ground and fine purple patterns all over are called "dancing crane." The ground color resembles indigo bellflower, and some flowers are exceptionally large. There are white six-petaled varieties called "wet silk" and purple six-petaled ones. "Great Yatsuhashi" is also purple-colored with exceptionally large flowers. "Village clouds" has light mouse-gray ground with slight purple striping, also having six petals. One variety found around Suita in Settsu Province has coloring like the dancing crane, with fine patterns covering the entire petal - quite magnificent. There are others with vertical stripes and standing variations. There is no time to describe them all.

large white, light red, white, pale red, white-bottomed, and inner red. There are large purple, medium purple, light purple, white, and pale purple. There are red-bottomed ones. Among the fragrant varieties is large white. There are large yellow and large white-silver striped varieties. Large gold-silver striped ones. Medium purple with yellow edges is called "brocade standing." Those resembling peonies are called "peony standing." Those with short fragrance and small size are considered superior, while large ones are considered inferior. Those with seeds in the center like peonies, standing in threes and fives, sprouting from the ground in red color and growing to a height of two to three feet are considered good. Both leaves and branches lean against heavy wood and stand toward heaven. The leaves have three branches, with nine, seven, five, or three leaflets. Some have five leaflets at the tip with two leaves facing each other at the base.

Shakuyaku grows in the river valleys and hills of Chūgaku. Now it exists everywhere. Those from Wainan are superior. In spring it produces red buds forming clusters. On the stem there are three branches and five leaves, resembling peony but narrower and longer. Height is one to two feet. It opens flowers at the beginning of summer. There are several varieties in red, white, and purple. The seeds resemble peony but are smaller. Roots are harvested in autumn. Roots also come in two colors, red and white. Cui Bao's "Gujin Zhu" says: There are two types of shakuyaku - herbaceous shakuyaku and woody shakuyaku. The woody type has large flowers with deep colors. It is commonly called peony, but this is incorrect.
Alternative names include Kari, Byakujutsu, Yokaku, Rishoku, Kaisō, and Sen.
