茎は薄い色で節がある。四弁の花びらで、二弁は大きく、二弁は小さい。内側に黄色の縁があり、花びらは薄紅色である。

【囲みの外】木も葉も柘植に似ている。花は紫陽花に似て白く、花の形は細長くして杉なりに台が立って開くゆえに、唐紫陽花ともいう。六月に花が咲く。花の乏しい時節にて花が貴重であるゆえに、また額草ともいう。
