その領土を独占し、山東の利益を専らにして、身を削り顔に刺青をし、
毛皮を着て、自らを蝦夷と称している、と
天書第六に見えている。日本紀註によると、（案ずるにこの時、自らアイヌと
称したであろう。今の夷人は皆自らアイヌと称している。それゆえに蝦夷の文
字を当てて、日本紀等ではエビスと訓じ、はるか後世に至って新古今集に撰
入された前右大将頼朝の歌に「陸奥のイワデシノブは蝦夷知ら
ぬと」と詠んだ。おおよそこの頃よりエビスを中略するとソは通音である）
英語訳
They monopolize that territory and exclusively control the profits of the eastern mountains, scarify their bodies and tattoo their faces,
wear fur clothing, and call themselves Ezo, as
can be seen in the Tensho [Book] Volume Six. According to the annotations of the Nihon-ki (Chronicles of Japan), (upon examination, at this time they likely
called themselves Ainu. Present-day barbarians all call themselves Ainu. Therefore, the characters for Ezo were applied [phonetically], and in the Nihon-ki and other works they are read as "Ebisu." Much later, in the Shinkokin-shū anthology was included a poem by former Right General Yoritomo: "The Iwade-shinobu of Mutsu, the Ezo do not know." Generally from this time, Ebisu was abbreviated... and "so" is a phonetic equivalent)
