現代語訳
西の丸表の火の番（火災警備）一人が欠員になったので、補充人員を願い出ました。小普請組支配へ用人が申し伝え、書面提出その他聞き付けた願い出も別紙として書き取った通りでございます。鋭次郎の件について、少々の石高で今度は上がり高（収入増）もございませんが、この者の性質は貞実で、身の持ち方や家の取り締まりは申すまでもなく、また養父行蔵が生存の時の孝行の件や行跡等がよろしい段を聞いており、奇特なことである旨を天保六年十二月に伺いの上、回答を置いた様子を申し伝え置きました。
芸術（武芸）の件については、養父行蔵が師範であって、左の通り真心をもって出精いたした由来で、

右の伺いも免許の当時、師範を務める養父行蔵に劣らず達者になったとのことです。
右の伺いも怠ることなく出精を心がけて在勤しており、万事小身の者には似つかわしくない優秀な人物でございます。今度も支配からひたすら歎願いたしております。一体、羽織格の者ではございますが、格別の訳をもって上下格相応の場所へ出してくださるよう、まず迂回して相談を置きました。
別紙書き抜きの趣旨もあり、その外書き抜きの通り類例もございますので、右の鋭次郎の件を取り調べるようにいたすべきです。この段、御賢慮をお伺い申し上げます。以上

Regarding the replacement for one fire guard position that became vacant at the West Citadel (Nishi-maru), we have submitted a request for personnel. The retainer conveyed this to the supervisor of the Kobushin-gumi (minor construction group), and the submitted documents as well as other petitions that came to our attention are recorded separately as noted.
Regarding Eitarō, though his rice stipend is modest and there is no increase in income this time, this person's character is virtuous and upright. His personal conduct and household management are exemplary, needless to say. Furthermore, we have heard that his filial piety toward his adoptive father Gyōzō during his lifetime and his general conduct were excellent. This was reported as admirable behavior, and a response was provided after inquiry in the 12th month of Tenpō 6 (1835).
Regarding martial arts, his adoptive father Gyōzō was an instructor, and [Eitarō] has devoted himself wholeheartedly to training as follows:

Regarding the above inquiry, at the time of receiving his license, he became as accomplished as his adoptive father Gyōzō, who served as an instructor.
Regarding the above inquiry, he continues to serve diligently without neglect, always striving to excel. In all matters, he is an outstanding person, quite remarkable for someone of low rank. This time as well, his supervisor earnestly petitions on his behalf. Generally, he holds the rank of haori-kaku (a mid-level samurai rank), but with special consideration, we have preliminarily consulted about placing him in a position appropriate to his rank and status.
As there are also the contents of the separate document extracts, and other similar precedents exist as noted in the extracts, we should investigate the matter of Eitarō. We humbly seek your wise consideration on this matter. Above.
