現代語訳
絹屋嘉右衛門は鎌田又八の物語により猫の仕業を知り、なおも試しに見ようと、ひそかに様子をうかがう。
「さてこそ、さてこそ。あれあれ、いよいよ猫めの仕業に違いない。どうりで暗い所へ引きこもり、給仕の者を側へ寄せつけないというのも、そのはずだ。よく分かった。」
嘉右衛門の娘おしがは、婆の様子を見て怖がる。
「おお、怖や怖や。」
猫は嘉右衛門の母を食い殺し、母に化けて暗い所へ入り、朝夕の膳も給仕を遠ざけて食ったとかいう。
「にゃあにゃあにゃあにゃあにゃあ。給仕のなんのとは、母に化けても面倒だから、眼病ということにして人を避けたのは、賢いじゃないか。」
英語訳
Silk merchant Kaemon, having learned of the cat's deeds from Kamata Matahachi's story, still wanted to test it further and secretly observed the situation.
"Indeed, indeed. There, there - it's definitely the work of that cat. No wonder she shuts herself away in dark places and won't let the servants come near. That makes perfect sense now. I understand completely."
Kaemon's daughter Oshiga becomes frightened seeing the old woman's condition.
"Oh, how terrifying, how terrifying!"
The cat had devoured Kaemon's mother, transformed into her likeness, retreated to dark places, and ate the morning and evening meals while keeping the servants at a distance.
"Meow meow meow meow meow. Rather than deal with the trouble of servants and such while disguised as mother, pretending to have an eye disease to avoid people - how clever indeed!"
