現代語訳
「やれ恐ろしや、恐ろしや。」
その時突然、空がかき曇り、大雨大風が石を降らし、家鳴り震動やまざりけり。
されば鎌田又八は嘉右衛門に頼まれ、鉢巻をりりしく、たすきをかいがいしく（締めて）、刀を研ぎ澄まし、かの隠居所へ切り込みしに、老婆と見えしは赤猫の姿を現し、逃げ出でんとする所を、畳みかけて切り殺しける。
「俺が太刀先に向かって逃げようとは、不届きな化け猫の骨頂め。」
気の利いた若い者どもが化け猫を捕らえんと来たりしが、この体を見て気を失いぬ。
