現代語訳
鎌田又八は伯母の所へ落ち着き、心を緩めて休んでいたが、囲炉裏で物音がするので覗き見ると、異類異形の化け物が集まっている。すさまじい山伏が窓から覗き、口なめずりをしている様は、身の毛もよだつほど恐ろしい。
「さては宵に打ち倒したあの古狸の目が死に際に、俺を騙そうとは本当に肝が潰れる。」

伯母と見えた者は、口が耳の根まで裂けており、その恐ろしさは例えようがない。
囲炉裏で火を焚き、生首を炙って食らう。
されこうべがまるで生きているかのように、いくつともなく踊り出て、又八を見て笑う。

Kamada Matahachi settled down at his aunt's place and was resting with his guard down, but hearing sounds from the hearth, he peered through and saw various monsters of different forms gathering together. A terrifying mountain priest (yamabushi) was peering through the window, licking his lips - a sight so horrifying it made one's hair stand on end.
"So it's the spirit of that old tanuki I struck down earlier this evening, trying to deceive me - it truly makes my liver freeze."
