金 和名はコガネ。往古は本邦に金のあることを知らず。聖武天皇天平二十一年二月丁巳、陸奥国より初めて黄金を貢ぐるよし『続日本紀』に見えたり。大伴家持の歌に「すめろきの御代栄えんと東なる陸奥山に黄金花咲く」と詠ぜしも、その時の歌なり。後世、諸国より出づ。
△砂金 和名はナスヒガネ。○蝦夷産は上品。○若狭産は上品なり。
△金鉱 鉱はまた鉱に作る。五金皆石中に生ず。溶かし分かざるを鉱と言う。先輩、鉱をマブと訓ず。然れども今、金山にて称するところのマブは金銀を掘りたる穴の名なり。金鉱をヒイシと言う。またニと言う。但しニと言うは金銀ともに通称す。銅鉱をばクと言う。○佐渡産は上品。○武蔵秩父山産は中品。
銀 和名はシロカネ。
天武天皇三年三月七日、対馬国の国司守忍海造大国言す、「銀初めて当国に出づ。即ち貢上す」。是によりて大国に小錦下位を授く。およそ銀、倭国にあること初めてこの時に出づと『日本書紀』に出でたり。後世、諸国より出づ。

Gold Japanese name: Kogane. In ancient times, it was not known that gold existed in our country. According to the Shoku Nihongi, on the day of Hinoto-mi in the second month of the twenty-first year of Tenpyo under Emperor Shomu, Mutsu Province first offered tribute of gold. Otomo no Yakamochi's poem "That our sovereign's reign may flourish, golden flowers bloom on Mount Mutsu in the east" was also composed at that time. In later ages, it came from various provinces.

On the seventh day of the third month of the third year of Emperor Tenmu, the provincial governor of Tsushima, Mamikai no Miyatsuko Okuni, reported: "Silver has appeared for the first time in our province and is hereby offered as tribute." For this reason, Okuni was awarded the court rank of Shokin-ge. This was the first time silver was found in Yamato country, as recorded in the Nihon Shoki.
