それから幸介は豚汁の長いのか、鼻の下の長いのか、五、六年になるけれども、日々鰻やすっぽん、オットセイその他気に入ったあらゆる練り薬を用いた。それでも内にいることはできず、時折出て見れば、「このころ業平が見えないが、あれ向こうを通るのか。今浅草の方へ行ったのか。昨日は孔雀茶屋で見たのに」と評判され、いよいよ身を大事にして、もう十年も養生をして大腹が抜けるほどいっぱいに呑もうと思っている。腹の上を通る〔判読困難〕も〔判読困難〕そうそう人の世話になっていられず、御師の店を借りて一人暮らしをしているけれど、いつ何時に女房を持たなければならないか。五百人も妻を持とうが、天子ではないので、三千の官女も持たず、好きなこととして納めている。

From then on, Kōsuke—whether it was his love for rich pork soup or his lecherous nature—continued for five or six years, daily consuming eels, soft-shell turtles, sea otters, and all other medicinal preparations that pleased him. Even so, he couldn't stay indoors, and whenever he ventured out, people would comment: "We haven't seen Narihira lately. Ah, there he goes over there. Did he just head toward Asakusa? Yesterday we saw him at the Peacock Tea House." Being talked about like this, he became even more careful with his health, thinking he would continue his health regimen for another ten years until he could drink his fill until his big belly nearly burst. Unable to keep relying on others' care, he rented lodgings from a shrine guide and lived alone. But when would he need to take a wife? Even if he were to have five hundred wives, he wasn't the Emperor, so he wouldn't have three thousand court ladies—he settled this as merely his personal preference.
